St Albans Secondary College recognises that students who come from a language background other than English require additional support to assist them to develop English language proficiency. Therefore, the College offers EAL classes to students who have resided in Australia, or another predominately English-speaking country, and have been enrolled in schools where English has been the major language of instruction for less than five years.
The EAL program at St Albans Secondary College aims to align its curriculum with the mainstream English curriculum where possible, but to differentiate it where necessary. This means that EAL classes are specifically designed to support students by providing informed teaching and assessment to address students’ language needs. This approach better helps to prepare them for the academic requirements of secondary and tertiary study, and for their transition to mainstream English classes.
Some EAL students may be eligible to attend an English Language Centre (ELC) prior to enrolling at St Albans Secondary College. The ELC provides students with the English language skills and cultural understanding necessary to participate successfully in Australian schooling systems and the broader society.
Most of our non-English speaking students attend the Western English Language School in Braybrook prior to enrolling with us.
