St Albans Secondary College recognises that students from a language background other than English require additional support to develop English language proficiency. The College offers EAL classes to students who speak a language other than English at home and have been enrolled in an Australian school for less than five years.
EAL classes follow the Victorian Curriculum F–10 English as an Additional Language (EAL), the mandated curriculum for EAL students in Victorian government schools. The EAL program aligns with the mainstream English program where possible and is differentiated where necessary, so that teaching and assessment address students’ language needs and prepare them for secondary and tertiary study and for the transition to mainstream English classes.
Some newly arrived students are eligible to attend an English language school or centre (a new arrivals program) before enrolling. These intensive programs help students adapt to the Australian education system and society. Most of our newly arrived students attend the Western English Language School in Braybrook prior to enrolling.
