Strengthening Engagement & Achievement in Mathematics & Science (SEAMS)

Over the Summer holidays, a group of Year 12 students participated in the Strengthening Engagement and Achievement in Mathematics and Science (SEAMS) Camp run by Monash University in partnership with The University of Melbourne. The three-day camp was an exciting opportunity for students to discover the possibilities that studying Mathematics, Science and higher education have to offer. During the camp, they engaged in interactive workshops and academic sessions to prepare them for Year 11 and 12 Maths Methods, Chemistry and Physics subjects. They also participated in social activities to create lifelong friendships amongst their peers.

Below is a student’s reflection of the SEAMS experience:

“SEAMS camp at Monash University was one of those experiences. You know, what adults tell you about? Those unforgettable memories, the “good old days”; the days of their youths. SEAMS was undoubtedly a place for camaraderie, for socialisation, but most of all for growth, for learning. It was a place where our normal worries slipped away, replaced with unadulterated joy.

We had movie night on the first day called “Hidden Figures”. It was an eye-opening film, offering new perspectives on science, and the discrimination that’s associated with traditional academia. We did fun experiments on day two and engaged in several lightsabers and fun demonstrations. We also played several games with our friends including Monopoly, Cricket, Jenga, Trivia and Scavenger Hunt.

Those three days were some of the most laughter filled days I’ve ever lived, and to laugh that much with strangers? People from all over, from Tasmania to Echuca, all laughing alongside us. That must be special. SEAMS, with no stretch of the word, was unforgettable”.Kritik Dhingra on behalf of the SEAMS Team
