Grade 6 Parent Information Evening – Mathematics at St Albans Secondary College

On Tuesday, 18 March 2025, St Albans Secondary College hosted its annual Grade 6 Parent Information Evening, providing families with valuable insights into our school’s academic programs. As part of this event, the mathematics faculty engaged parents in an interactive and informative session, highlighting the diverse and enriching maths opportunities available to students.

Held in S4 of the Science Centre, our space was thoughtfully decorated with visible maths signs, graphs, and 3-D objects, creating an inviting and stimulating environment. Over the course of the evening, Ms Jennifer PAPAGIANOPOULOS (Maths Learning Area Leader) and Ms Gloria Yi (Assistant Maths Learning Area Leader) conducted five engaging 15-minute sessions, ensuring all attendees had the opportunity to learn about our comprehensive maths curriculum.

The sessions commenced with a brief introduction to our mathematics program, outlining the different maths subjects offered in Year 10—Applied Maths, Maths A, Maths B, and Maths B Advanced—as well as our VCE options, which include General Maths, Mathematical Methods, and Specialist Maths. This provided parents with a clear understanding of the pathways available to their children as they progress through their mathematical learning journey.

Following the introduction, parents enthusiastically participated in a series of interactive maths games, such as Sudoku, number pattern matching games, fraction matching games, number matching games, and Maths Bingo. These activities not only showcased the engaging nature of mathematics but also highlighted the importance of problem-solving and logical thinking in everyday learning. Additionally, we displayed the textbooks used in our courses and answered any questions parents had about the curriculum and student learning expectations.

The evening was a resounding success, with parents appreciating the opportunity to gain firsthand experience with our approach to teaching maths. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm and engagement from our school community, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a positive and dynamic learning environment for all students.

We extend our gratitude to all families who attended and look forward to welcoming the next generation of students into our maths program at St Albans Secondary College!
