Junior School Report

The junior school students have been busy at the start of Term 2.

As we normally do the term kicked off with year level assemblies.  This year we have been holding a raffle for all those students who have obtained ‘Positive Behaviour Recognition’ tickets over the course of the last term.  These tickets are normally obtained for showing safe, respectful and responsible behaviour in the yard, although sometimes they can be obtained for classroom behaviour too.  It has been really heartening to see the positive way that students are responding to receiving these tickets.  The raffle involves 10-20 students from each year level having their name drawn from a hat.  They then get to choose from a range of prizes such as Squishmallows, drink bottles, sporting equipment and games.  The junior school aims to keep these prizes flowing for the rest of the year.

During 2025 we have a special focus on school attendance.  Whilst the school typically records quite good attendance, it is important to highlight that every lesson is important and so it is crucial that all students do their very best to attend each and every day.  The percentage attendance is printed on academic reports and there is a clear correlation between high attendance and each student achieving their best academically.  At the end of the semester the class that has recorded the highest average attendance will enjoy a pizza lunch.  In addition, those classes that have obtained the biggest improvement from term one to term two will also enjoy a pizza lunch.

On 1 May the year 7 cohort visited Melbourne Zoo for a Science excursion.  We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed both the beautiful gardens as well as the animals.  Students participated in a lesson lead by one of the zookeepers focussed on adaption or classification.  It was gratifying to see that the students were on their very best behaviour.  Students presented in their full school uniform and were prompt with meeting at pre-arranged spots throughout the day.  The day ran very smoothly, and this is a credit to our students and the hard-working staff.

While the year 7 cohort was at the zoo, prospective grade 6 students attended St Albans Secondary College for a Taster Day.  The students were brimming with enthusiasm and participated in a range of activities prepared by the learning area leaders.  The day finished with a small concert in the Performing Arts Centre.  The Taster Day is a key part of the transition program for grade 6 into year 7 students.  The successful future of the school is assured based on the students that we hosted on that day.
