VCE Maths Games Day
On Friday the 1 August, we attended the VCE MAV Maths Games at RMIT Storey Hall. At the games, we were split into two teams, set to complete a range of puzzles and games whilst competing against other schools. First, we were given 4 different puzzles to complete, there were sets of rules we had to follow to make sure the numbers added up, similar to a sudoku but way more challenging. Then we moved on to the Swiss challenge, where we versed different schools to figure out number patterns given that we were provided with a hint and the first view values of the rule. Try and guess what rule applies to this one! The hint is “holey moley”. If x= 2, y= 0; x= 10, y= 1; x = 88, y = 4; x= 104, y=?
The last round we played was a relay that consisted of multiple worded problems where we would have to run up to a designated teacher to receive a single question, run back to our table to solve the problem and finally run back to the teacher to both check our answer and receive a new question. This repeated until the time limit ran out. Not only did it test our problem-solving skills but also our running skills (thanks Angie for being our runner).
Overall, it was a great experience and an amazing opportunity to have fun, do some math puzzles and meet new people. And if you were wondering what the answer to the question above was, the answer is 2, where the y value depended on how many ‘holes’ were in the x value, for example when x = 6, y=1 since there is one hole in the number 6.

SASC Students Compete at Yr 8 MAV Maths Games Day
On Wednesday 20 August, eight of our Yr8 students, Elisha Chua, Jayson Huynh, Sophia Ly, Jonathon Mai, Anson Nguyen, Ben Pham, Mai Pham and Harkeerat Singh, from St Albans Secondary College, represented our school with pride and enthusiasm at the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) Maths Games Day, hosted at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. The students formed two teams and were accompanied by Ms Gloria Yi and Mr Cameron Beale.
Throughout the day, students immersed themselves in a series of fast-paced and challenging activities that tested their mathematical knowledge, teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity. The event brought together 57 teams from high-performing independent and government schools across Victoria, creating a vibrant and competitive atmosphere.
Despite the tough competition, our students performed exceptionally well and finished in 21st and 37th place. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to their perseverance, problem-solving abilities, and collaborative spirit.
Beyond the scores, our students consistently demonstrated the core SASC values of Leadership, Respect, Integrity, Excellence, and Critical Thinking & Creativity. They approached each challenge with positivity, encouraged one another, and represented the school with integrity.
Congratulations to all students involved!
