At St Albans Secondary College we use School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) to manage student behaviour. SWPBS is an internationally recognised framework with an extensive evidence base that is shown to improve behavioural, wellbeing, and academic outcomes for children and young people. It provides a school improvement framework that supports the College to create a positive and supportive learning environment for all students. SWPBS focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours while providing targeted assistance to students who may need extra support, leading to a more successful and inclusive learning community. SWPBS ensures that all students receive support to maximise behavioural, wellbeing and academic growth.
The approach also improves teacher wellbeing by providing them with the tools to establish positive climates for learning where they can focus on teaching and learning, by increasing engagement and instructional time.
SWPBS is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.
Behaviour expectations
An essential aspect of SWPBS is to provide clear behaviour expectations and rules for our whole school community so everyone can work together to the same standard. St Albans Secondary College has developed its positive behaviour program in consultation with students, staff and families.
Our behaviour expectations apply to all students – in the classroom, in the yard and in the wider community. They are:
- Be safe
- Be respectful
- Be responsible
To support a consistent approach to what that means in different settings the College has developed a behaviour matrix. Our full matrix is available as a link on this page.
Also see below for our ALL-LOCATIONS matrix which applies at all times and to all locations across the College as well as our CLASSROOM matrix.
