The Pathways program guides and supports every student in making informed subject selection choices and planning a pathway for the future.
The Pathways team use structured classroom activities and individual counselling interviews to provide future planning advice and guidance to every student.
Each student has an individual Career Action Plan (CAP), which is reviewed annually throughout their schooling years as they work towards course subject selection and future study, training and employment goals.
Over recent years, St Albans Secondary College has had a highly successful tertiary placement rate, providing high quality pathways for exiting Year 12 students.
Introduction to Careers Education
Students in Years’ 7 & 8 begin their Career Education journey using a range of ‘I Discover and I Explore’ activities to help students identify their strengths, interests and values. Students are also introduced to Employability Skills before identifying how they are, and have been, developing them in their schooling as well as every-day life and then aligning them to various career areas. This is followed up by the introduction of the Labour Market and how the growth of career areas can be influenced and what kinds of skills are required to navigate this ever-evolving market in the future.
These activities serve as a strong foundation, allowing students to make informed decisions in their middle and senior years in regard to their own personal career aspirations, subject selections and beginnings of their own ongoing career pathways and development.
Morrisby Careers Discovery Program
All Year 9’s are invited to access the Morrisby Careers Discovery Program. It is a multi-staged program and concludes with a one-on-one interview with a Morrisby Careers Counsellor. Students then complete the online Careers Action Plan (CAP), identifying career pathways they are most interested in and the strategies they need to implement, and subjects to study at school in order to achieve those pathways.
Course Selection
Students combine their Year 9 Career Action Plan with a Career Goals Job Exploration and Pre-Course Selection Assignment to further consolidate their pathway and select subjects heading into Year 10 and beyond.
Students complete one of two online Career Action Plans depending on whether they have a VCE VM or VCE pathway. This is their Pre-course Selection Assignment that leads to subject selection.
All students who identify as wanting a VCE VM pathway have the opportunity to attend a Trade Taster excursion or incursion to assist them in choosing their VET (Vocational Education and Training) course that forms part of their VCE VM program.
Work Experience
In Year 10, all students complete the Work Experience Program for one week in June. We urge students to look for work experience in their career interest area in order to gain so insight into that working environment. Experience in a workplace is linked to students graduating with higher employability skills and career awareness and at St Albans Secondary College this program is compulsory. This program is directly linked to their Year 10 English, Semester 1 outcome.
Year 10 students all participate in a one to one interview with aa Careers Pathways Counsellor to discuss their progress and aspirations for Year 11 and beyond.
Course Selection
Students use their Career Action Plan (Pre-course Selection Assignment) and Year 9 Morrisby Profile to further consolidate their pathway and select subjects heading into VCE or VM.
Parents are most welcome to attend the individual student interviews as they select their pathway into Senior Years.
Pathway Plan
Individual pathway interviews are conducted with every Year 10 student.
