Human Health and Development

Year 11 Health and Human Development students recently received a firsthand look into the world of healthcare when Chelsea Somerton, a Critical Care nurse at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, dropped by to talk to the class.

Chelsea shared her personal journey through high school, her subsequent pathway into the nursing profession, and the profound life changes that come with navigating early parenthood.

From VCE Uncertainty to Critical Care

Chelsea connected with the students immediately by reflecting on her own VCE experience. She candidly shared that while she always enjoyed learning about health, she was unsure of which career path she wanted to pursue.

It was only after exploring different options that she discovered nursing. Her journey served as a reassuring reminder to our students that it is entirely normal not to have your whole life mapped out in Year 11. Chelsea eventually found herself as a critical care nurse at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where she helps patients through their most critical moments.

Navigating the Challenges of Parenthood

Beyond professional insights, Chelsea gave the class a heartwarming look into her personal life by introducing them to her son, Tate. Speaking openly about becoming a first-time mother, she detailed the steep learning curve, responsibilities, and unexpected challenges and enjoyment that come with caring for a newborn. Chelsea discussed how she and her partner have had to adapt some of their daily routines and overall lifestyle to accommodate the realities of becoming parents.

An Engaging and Interactive Experience

Inspired by Chelsea’s honesty, the Year 11 students asked insightful questions, querying her on everything from her nursing career, pregnancy, labour/birth and the day-to-day realities of parenting. The classroom dynamic was further brightened by little Tate himself, and the students thoroughly enjoyed interacting with him. By linking textbook theories of health professions and lifestyle adjustments to Chelsea’s lived experiences, the visit left a lasting impression on the Year 11’s. We extend a huge thank you to Chelsea and Tate for spending time with our school community!
