Student Leadership Conference

We recently held our first annual Student Leadership Conference. We hosted the leaders from Copperfield College, as well as our student leaders. The day was facilitated by our school captains, and we were privileged to hear from Georgia Cutajar, Executive Officer of Victorian Student Representative Council (VicSRC) and ex-student Eangano Singehebhuye.

Feedback from the day was very positive. Thank you to Ms Avril Good and Ms Amy Lee for their organisation of the event.

Grade 6 Information Evening

On Tuesday 18 March we hosted our annual information evening for prospective Year 2026 students and their families. Over 200 people attended. Our student leaders welcomed them, and they completed a tour of the school together with presentations from the Learning Area Leaders.

Thanks to all the staff who supported this event, and special thanks to Ms Lauren Honeycombe and Mr Ron Brown for their organisation of the evening.

Mahurangi Visit

Last week, a group of teachers from Mahurangi College in New Zealand visited our school to learn more about the strategies we’ve implemented to achieve excellent results in Numeracy and Mathematics. During their visit, they had insightful discussions with Joe Vincent, our Numeracy Learning Specialist, and Kathleen Main, our Teaching and Learning Leader. They also had the opportunity to observe several classes in action.

The teachers were particularly impressed with the outstanding behaviour of our students and the impressive facilities and grounds. Overall, they expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to visit and left with a wealth of ideas and inspiration to take back to New Zealand.

Funfields Excursion Success

At the start of the year, the Middle Sub School organised an excursion to Funfields as an opportunity for staff and students to connect and build a sense of community. This marks the first time we’ve held this excursion in several years, and by all accounts, it was a resounding success.

We would like to commend our Year 9 students for their exemplary behaviour during the trip in February. The Funfields staff were so impressed with the students’ conduct that they generously provided free passes, which we will use as awards to recognise positive behaviour in the future.

Curriculum Day

During our recent curriculum day, teachers engaged in professional learning focused on student voice and agency. The day offered valuable insights into the definitions of both concepts, as well as an opportunity to explore various strategies for incorporating them into the classroom. A highlight of the day was the inspiring presentations from three of our Year 12 student leaders, Minhthu Huynh (School Captain) Talia Bui and Tiana Stepanovski who shared their perspectives and experiences. We extend our gratitude to all our curriculum and teaching and learning leaders for creating such an engaging and meaningful professional learning experience.

The Difference Between Voice and Agency:

  • Student Agency: This refers to students having the power and responsibility to influence decisions related to their learning, working together with teachers to shape their educational experience.
  • Student Voice: This is about students sharing their ideas and feedback on their learning and school experiences, allowing teachers to better understand their needs and perspectives. While voice informs, agency empowers students to act on those insights.

Swimming Carnival

All Year 7 and 8 and selected senior students travelled to Oak Park Aquatic Centre on Wednesday 5 March for our annual Swimming Carnival.  It was a wonderful day, both weatherwise and in terms of the enthusiasm of both staff and students. Many students made use of the giant waterslide and took part in water polo, volleyball and other activities that were organised and, along with the swimming, also contributed to house points throughout the day.  You can read more about the Swimming Carnival later in this newsletter.

The final points for each house were:

Well done to all participants, and congratulations to Rosewall House for being named the overall winner. Congratulations to Mr Rob Lakovski for his oversight and planning to make this such a successful event and thanks also to the Physical Education staff, House Leaders and all the staff who attended and helped run this event.

Year 7 Expo

It was lovely to see so many parents and families attend our annual Year 7 Expo evening held on 25 February.

Families were treated to classroom experiences and samples of student work from their core subjects of English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science and LOTE (Japanese or Italian). Thanks to the Junior Sub School for organising the evening and for the Year 7 students who came with their families to showcase what they have been doing so far this year. We also thank the classroom teachers for overseeing the room decorations and presentations on the evening.  We thank all the families who provided feedback, this will be used to make improvements for the future, although it is pleasing that the feedback received was generally positive and supportive.

These parent information sessions are run across the year for each Year Level, and it is wonderful that so many families support these events as it is a way for us to build connections as a school community. It also provides an opportunity to gain parent perspectives and for students to share experiences that support their learning with their parents.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews will be held on Wednesday 2 April between 1.00-700pm.  We encourage all parents and guardians to attend with their students and use this opportunity to meet teachers to discuss their child’s progress. The conversations assist us to provide the best outcomes for students. This event provides a forum for parents to meet all their child’s teachers and ask questions about their child’s learning and for information regarding ways to support learning to be shared between home and school.  Booking information will be provided via Compass, and all Year 7 students will receive a letter for parents, to outline the process for booking and other details. Interpreters will be available, but we have been experiencing some difficulties securing the number of interpreters we require so we recommend families bring a relative or friend (not a student) to assist with translation if there is someone available.

Please contact your child’s Year Level Coordinator or the general office if you are having difficulty booking times to meet with teachers once the portal for bookings is opened.

Junior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

The Junior School students finished the term with a flourish.  Most notably the Junior School students participated in the Swimming Carnival on 6 March at Oak Park Swimming Pool.  Students competed in a range of events throughout the day, with the stronger swimmers progressing through to a higher level of competition.  Throughout the day a range of other non-competitive activities were also available.  This included volleyball, pool volleyball and of course some time on the ever popular waterslides.  Luckily we had perfect weather for the whole day.  It was fantastic to see so many students engaged in competitive and non-competitive activities throughout the day.  The behaviour was impeccable, both at the pool and on the buses to and from the venue. It was a very successful day.

Our Year 7 students have been completing the NAPLAN tests during weeks 7 and 8.  These tests form a crucial benchmark for the assessment of our students and informs the strategies that are put in place to support them.

Term 1 Progress Reports will be released on Compass soon.  Please take the time to review the reports, together with your students.

We are looking forward to meeting parents at the Parent, Teacher, Student Conferences on 2 April.  This is a vital opportunity to receive direct feedback on the progress of your students from their teachers.  It is also nice to be able to put faces to the names that you have been hearing all year.  Please look out for details of the Term 1 conferences.

Mr Ben Beagley – Junior Sub School Leader

Middle School Report

Read Time: ( words)

As we near the end of term it is the perfect time to reflect on some of our successes. The middle school students have started to develop their organisational skills and are now checking compass, improving their punctuality and just generally taking greater accountability of their learning. The first round of progress reports has also just been completed so we encourage families to check compass and follow their students learning.

Earlier in the term the Year 9’s visited Funfields Theme Park. This team building day was incredibly successful with the Year 9’s having a very positive day out. The weather was perfect for the day as well with a warm sunny day. While there, the students had full access to the park including water slides, a wave pool and extreme rides. The students conducted themselves brilliantly and we were praised by staff at the venue for the exemplary behaviour of our cohort.

The Year 9’s have also recently completed their Morrisby Careers Guidance Counselling assessments and will commence the individual interviews early next term. This is the first step towards generating a careers profile for them and a process we will support them through until the end of Year 12, and often beyond. The cohort have also just completed their NAPLAN testing, and we eagerly await their results. A students NAPLAN result is usually a great indicator for their academic success moving forward and helps us better understand their learning needs. Combined with the Morrisby Careers program we will hopefully get an insight in potential careers for our students and help us prepare them as best we can.

The Middle School Coordination Team were lucky enough to be treated to a catered meeting by our Year 12 VET Cookery class. This is part of a broader expectation on several catered events that the class are required to host. The Year 12 VET class, under the guidance of Ms Daniela Karner, were fantastic and the food presented was at an incredibly high standard. With so many of our Year 10 students undertaking Food Studies this year we are hopeful that this trend continues long into the future. We’d like to publicly thank the class for their hard work and wish them the very best in their studies.

As always, we thank you school community for the ongoing support. Our students simply would not be as successful as they are without the guidance provided by our families. We encourage parents and guardians to attend our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences on 2 April with booking available through Compass. With the school holidays growing ever closer we’d like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable break.

Mr Owen McIntyre – Middle Sub School Leader

Senior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

Congratulations to all Senior Sub School students for completing a successful Term 1! Their dedication and hard work have set a positive tone for the year ahead, and we are proud of their commitment to their studies.

This term has been filled with some exciting events and experiences for our students.

The Senior Sub School held a Year 11 Parent Information Evening on Wednesday, 5 March. This event provided families with valuable insights into the requirements of the VCE, VPC and VCE VM. The evening was well attended, and we enjoyed musical performances from the VET music band.

On the 13 March, Year 11 psychology students attended Melbourne Zoo to conduct a fieldwork investigation related to ethics, while developing a range of key science skills. On 18 and 19 of March, the Year 12 biology students also enriched their learning by attending GTAC as part of their Unit 3 studies on applying biotechnologies to produce human insulin. The students engaged in hands-on experiments, inserting a human insulin gene into a plasmid and transforming bacteria. They worked with mentors with PhD qualifications and used state-of-the-art scientific equipment to conduct their experiments. The results from both studies contributed to their assessments back at school.

This excursion was interesting because we got to apply the knowledge we learnt in biology class to experiments. The experiments allowed me to gain a better understanding of how recombinant plasmids work in making human insulin. I particularly enjoyed looking at the glowing transformed bacteria under the microscope. The STEM mentors were very patient with us when guiding us through the experimental process. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience which helped me consolidate my knowledge”. – Yvonne Duong (12B)

Our senior sports teams have also been busy, with the senior intermediate boys’ baseball, senior and intermediate girls’ softball, senior boys’ futsal, and senior boys’ and girls’ tennis teams competing against other secondary schools. Additionally, our seniors participated in the Keilor Division Swimming Championships. We would like to commend all our students for their participation and excellent representation of the College.

This year, our Student Leadership Team took the initiative to host the 2025 Student Leadership Conference. The conference offered student leaders from our network schools valuable opportunities to build connections, develop action plans, enhance their leadership skills, and find inspiration. Designed and facilitated by students, for students, the event was a true reflection of student agency. We would like to congratulate our student leaders for their outstanding efforts in organising and leading the event, as well as for their continued dedication to supporting the school across many different areas. Student CPR ambassadors also participated in a leadership afternoon focused on mental health first aid, equipping the students with essential skills to support their peers. Thank you to Ms Good and Dottie from Wellbeing for providing opportunities for our senior students to broaden and deepen their leadership skills.

This Friday 21 March, our Year 11 students will be attending Lady Northcote Recreation Camp, which will offer great opportunities for team-building and outdoor activities. On the last day of school for the term, our Year 11 and Year 12 students will engage in the highly anticipated annual Year 11 vs. Year 12 soccer challenge. Both of these activities are aimed at enhancing team spirit, collaboration, engagement and connection amongst our students.

Looking ahead, on Friday 16 May, Year 11 students will attend the Victorian Careers Show at the Melbourne Showgrounds. The event will provide seminars on VCE subjects and information about career pathways, tertiary courses, apprenticeships, traineeships, and employment. This is an important event for students to attend as they prepare for their future careers. Parents/guardians are reminded to give consent and make payment via Compass. Families with a Health Care Card may be eligible for a government subsidy through CSEF (Camps, Sports, and Excursions Fund) or families can use the School Savings Bonus or pay via cash or card at the General Office.

The Senior Sub School has received the Year 11 and 12 progress reports and has started conducting interviews with students, and in some cases, parent meetings. These reports reflect students’ progress on formative tasks and SACs and help us monitor students who may need additional support or extension.

We highly recommend families to attend parent teacher interviews which will be held on Wednesday 2 April to hear about how your child is performing in these final and important years of their secondary education.

Finally, we would like to wish all our senior students and their families a relaxing and enjoyable term break.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 9366 25555.

Swimming Sports 2025 – A Fantastic Day!

On Tuesday, 5 March, our Year 7 and 8 students spent the day at Oak Park Swimming Pool for our annual Swimming Sports. With a perfect 30-degree day, the atmosphere was amazing, and so many students got involved!

The main events included 50m freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke, with students giving their best efforts in the pool. There were also lots of fun house activities like T-shirt relays, scavenger hunts, and water volleyball, keeping everyone entertained throughout the day. The waterslide opening at the end was a big hit!

In a close competition, Rosewall took the win with 440 points, followed by Irwin in second place with 390 points.  Well done to everyone for their fantastic participation and sportsmanship!

Swimming Carnival Report from the Year 10 House Captains

Our annual swimming carnival took place on Wednesday March 5th, at the Oak Park Sports and Aquatic Centre. With the sun shining and temperatures rising, it was the perfect condition for students to have fun enjoying a day at a pool and join some events to win points for their house teams. The carnival was filled with playful novelty events, competitive races and fiery house spirit!

Being house leaders of this year, we were presented with the opportunity of helping to ensure the carnival ran smoothly. As year 10 house captains we decided it would be fun to dress up as fairies to further reinforce our house spirit.  We had an unimaginable amount of fun hosting each event, as well as meeting and interacting with other students! So many people were eager to join in on the enthusiasm, which set the stage for a whole day of vibrancy and merriment.

The mood was full of an explosive dynamism. One of the highlights of the day would have been the scavenger hunt we held in the learner’s pool, as many students were quick to sign up for this hectic game. Other popular events were water volleyball as well as the wet T-shirt race, which amassed an influx of participants winning points for their house teams. As always, the line for the water slide extended into the horizon. Dry events included Volleyball, Badminton and Limbo. Towards the end of the day, a large water polo tournament was held with teams of 7 battling it out in the lap pool. An intense, competitive spirit filled the atmosphere as steals, blocks and goals warranted roars of cheer from the audience.

The day concluded with the winner of this year’s swimming carnival being…*drumroll please* … Rosewall! Rosewall managed to accumulate a total of 440 points, with 350 points from swimming events, as well as an additional 90 points from house events. Well done to everyone who managed to gain points for their respective teams. Thank you to those who contributed to making this day a huge success, we could not have done it without your enthusiasm and participation. 🙂

We look forward to helping once again at the Athletics Carnival that will take place later this year. May the best house win 😜

Sincerely, the Year 10 House Captain Team!!

Leon Tran – 7C

The role of house captain during this year’s swimming carnival has come with many exciting and fun opportunities, such as directing and encouraging activities, bonding with other house captains and supporting our house spirit. This overall experience was rewarding and inspiring, being the first chance for the year 8 house captains to take on our leadership role and strive. It was a memorable experience and such a successful event to be a part of.

Scavenger Hunt

One of the most enjoyable activities for me as a house captain was the scavenger hunt. This incorporated teamwork with the thrill of leading your team to victory. Many people participated to win house points for their house colour, including the year 7’s which was delightful to see. It was exciting to encourage our house teammates and fight for the reward of house points.

The Slide

Many students were also ecstatic to go on the slide. Whether they’ve gone on it before, numerous people lined up in the hot but suitable weather with their friends for the fun ride. This was a popular activity for all year levels as it was entertaining and a cool refreshment from the sun. This attraction overall brought together many students and created a lively atmosphere for the people who didn’t want to participate in the races and side activities.

Student Leadership Conference

On Friday 7 March, St Albans Secondary College hosted the first Student Leadership Conference for schools in our network. The event was planned and run by students, who organised everything from workshop slides to catering. Conference attendees participated in critical thinking and connection activities like ‘Lost at Sea’ and a jubilee debate, and in workshops about public speaking, responding to criticism, and writing proposals.

A highlight of the conference was the guest speaker, Eangano Singehebhuye, who inspired students by talking about goal setting and making sacrifices. Representatives from the VicSRC spoke about the work of the VicSRC, and how students can get involved.

In the afternoon, four St Albans students spoke about their leadership roles: Josephine Mai, Ezekiel Ong, Stephanie Truong and Elisha Chua.

A huge congratulations to all our student leaders who ran such an engaging and inspiring event, and to all the student leaders who participated in the day with thoughtfulness and enthusiasm.

Senior Interschool Volleyball

The senior boys’ volleyball team put on an outstanding performance at the interschool competition, displaying skill, teamwork, and incredible sportsmanship throughout the day. Representing St Albans Secondary College were Andrew Bawi (captain), Ethan Bui, Tien Duong, Jayden Francis, Michael Milano, Justin Ronquillo, Richard To, Khoa Tran, and Patrick Vo, with Lachlan Tran and teachers Simone Papagianopoulos and Steven Vo providing invaluable support with scoring and morale.

The boys started strong, securing dominant 2-0 victories against Taylors Lakes Secondary and Sunshine College. Special mention goes to Andrew Bawi for his excellent leadership as captain and Khoa Tran, who delivered some amazing serves under pressure. The energy and enthusiasm were high as the team entered the semi-finals, where they faced a tough Gilson team. Despite their best efforts, they fell short, losing to the eventual runner ups.

Though the journey ended in the semis, the team’s spirit never wavered. They supported each other through every great rally and tough moment, proving that their camaraderie was just as strong as their skills. As teachers, it was an absolute pleasure to witness their dedication, teamwork, and love for the game. Well done, boys!

Senior Boys Futsal Team Shows Skill and Determination

Our Senior Boys Futsal team put in a fantastic effort at today’s competition, finishing 2nd in their group after a day of intense matches. The boys started strong with a hard-fought draw in their opening game, followed by a dominant victory in their second match. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, a tough loss in the final game meant they narrowly missed out on a spot in the finals.

Throughout the day, the team represented the college with pride, showing great sportsmanship as both winners and competitors. Dressed sharply in their maroon Nike kits, they played with passion, skill, and teamwork.

A special mention goes to Sidon, our MVP, whose work ethic, mesmerizing skills, precise passing, and crucial goals set the tone for the team. Up front, Aimen was a constant attacking threat, while Abraham and Patrick stood firm at the back, making life difficult for opposing strikers. Ognen and Sidon both found the net three times, an impressive feat on a day where goals were scarce. Kevin To was consistently reliable, and in goals, Richard To was outstanding, making countless crucial saves in tightly contested matches.

And of course, a huge shoutout to the coaches. Mr. Lakovski, convening Boys Futsal for an incredible 16th year in a row, ensured the day ran like a Swiss watch. Meanwhile, Mr. Marinelli was busy incorporating top-secret tactics and making multiple game-changing substitutions—proving once again that no one manages teams better than Italians.

With most of the squad made up of Year 11 players, there is plenty of promise for next year. As Year 12s, this talented group will have the experience and drive to push further into the competition in 2026.

A huge congratulations to all the boys for their effort, teamwork, and resilience. While finals spot just eluded them, they should be proud of their performance—a true testament to their dedication and skill. Well done, team!

Strengthening Engagement & Achievement in Mathematics & Science (SEAMS)

Read Time: ( words)

Over the Summer holidays, a group of Year 12 students participated in the Strengthening Engagement and Achievement in Mathematics and Science (SEAMS) Camp run by Monash University in partnership with The University of Melbourne. The three-day camp was an exciting opportunity for students to discover the possibilities that studying Mathematics, Science and higher education have to offer. During the camp, they engaged in interactive workshops and academic sessions to prepare them for Year 11 and 12 Maths Methods, Chemistry and Physics subjects. They also participated in social activities to create lifelong friendships amongst their peers.

Below is a student’s reflection of the SEAMS experience:

“SEAMS camp at Monash University was one of those experiences. You know, what adults tell you about? Those unforgettable memories, the “good old days”; the days of their youths. SEAMS was undoubtedly a place for camaraderie, for socialisation, but most of all for growth, for learning. It was a place where our normal worries slipped away, replaced with unadulterated joy.

We had movie night on the first day called “Hidden Figures”. It was an eye-opening film, offering new perspectives on science, and the discrimination that’s associated with traditional academia. We did fun experiments on day two and engaged in several lightsabers and fun demonstrations. We also played several games with our friends including Monopoly, Cricket, Jenga, Trivia and Scavenger Hunt.

Those three days were some of the most laughter filled days I’ve ever lived, and to laugh that much with strangers? People from all over, from Tasmania to Echuca, all laughing alongside us. That must be special. SEAMS, with no stretch of the word, was unforgettable”.Kritik Dhingra on behalf of the SEAMS Team

Alumnus – Guest Speaker

Eangano Singehebhuye ‘15, an alumnus and steadfast supporter of SASC, was a natural choice to address our school leaders at their March 7th conference. He captivated the audience with his personal story, tracing his path from a young soccer player who saw a community in need to the helm of a thriving charity. He revealed the secrets to his success: a strong network, a belief in the potential of others, and decisive action. ‘Don’t wait,’ he advised, ‘just start.’ Students eagerly sought his insights on finance, entrepreneurship, and, of course, his favourite football team (Chelsea). His words left a lasting impression.

International Women’s Day

The celebration of International Women’s Day brought another inspiring speaker: Hao Lu ’17. Hao, a Biomedical Scientist and accomplished pianist, shared her remarkable journey of overcoming challenges. She empowered the audience with advice on self-compassion, self-belief, and the power of communication. Hao urged the next generation of female leaders to challenge stereotypes and build a world where they can achieve their dreams. Her message was clear: ‘Take it steady and believe in yourself’.
