Recognition of Service Ceremony

I would like you to join me in congratulating 2 of our staff who were honured at the 2025 Recognition of Service Ceremony, held at Pullman on the Park on Sunday May 18th.

For 40 years of service: Athina Kratsis

For 50 years of service: Mario Orsini

On behalf of all of us, the many students you have influenced and the whole school community, I would like to thank you for your years of service, and for your commitment to St Albans SC  particularly and public education in general.

National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week

The College recently commemorated National Sorry Day on 26 May, as well as National Reconciliation Week. National Sorry Day is a day of remembrance and reflection for members of the Stolen Generations, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families, communities, and cultures between the 1800s and the 1970s.

The first Sorry Day was held in Sydney on 26 May 1998 and has been commemorated nationally on the same date each year since. Thousands of Australians from all walks of life participate in memorial services, commemorative meetings, survival celebrations, and community gatherings in honour of the Stolen Generations.

National Sorry Day also marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, which runs from 27 May to 3 June 2025. This week provides an opportunity for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements—and to consider how we can all contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2025 is: Bridging Now to Next. This theme calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead, and to continue the push toward reconciliation, guided by the lessons of the past.

IDAHOBIT Day

Another important date on our Wellbeing Calendar is IDAHOBIT Day, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia. On this day, we take time as a College to celebrate diversity and stand against discrimination towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

IDAHOBIT Day is also an opportunity to publicly affirm our support for LGBTQIA+ colleagues, peers, and students with a clear message: “We stand with you.”

A huge thank you to our Wellbeing Team, VCE-VM students, and student leaders for organising a fantastic lunchtime event to celebrate our diversity and rainbow community.

School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

This term marks the introduction of our inaugural SWPBS Awards. Our school has implemented the School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) model, an internationally recognised framework with a strong evidence base shown to improve behavioural, wellbeing, and academic outcomes for children and young people.

SWPBS provides a structured school improvement framework that helps the College foster a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.

These new awards acknowledge students who have achieved high levels of House Points awarded through participation in sporting, cultural, and school activities, as well as through consistent positive behaviour and classroom effort.

Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards will be announced at the upcoming student assemblies.

Celebrating Student Achievement and School Community Events

Congratulations to Adam Downing (Year 10) on graduating from Zoos Victoria’s Youth Conservation Leaders program. This prestigious 11-day program, which ran from May to June 2025, brought together Year 9 and 10 students from across Victoria to develop science leadership skills and engage in real-world conservation projects. Participants were mentored by Zoos Victoria staff and took part in hands-on activities at Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary.

Adam represented our school with distinction, presenting his work articulately and confidently to an audience of around 100 people. We commend Adam for his dedication to conservation and thank him for being such a positive ambassador for our school.

Year 7–9 SEAL Parent Evening

Thank you to Thach Ly for organising our Year 7–9 SEAL Parent Evening, held on Thursday 22nd May. With over 100 attendees, the evening was a great success. Highlights included catering by our talented Year 12 VET Hospitality students, a lively student debate on “Who is responsible for keeping young people safe online?”, and a panel featuring three of our SEAL alumni —Lani Nguyen (2018), Anthony Tran (2022), and Maybel Verma (Class of 2024).

These alumni shared inspiring stories of their time at SASC and their journeys beyond school, emphasising the value of choosing subjects and activities that align with personal interests, and the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between work, play, and active citizenship. We are grateful for their ongoing connection to our school community.

Special thanks to Daniela Karner for her leadership of the VET class, and to the many staff who supported the event, including Amy Lee, Katelyn Smith, the library team, and Nick D’Aglas.

Student Progress and Upcoming Opportunities

Over the past few weeks, students in Years 9, 10, and 11 have been undertaking exams — for many, their first formal exam experience. We are proud of the mature and focused approach they have demonstrated.

Year 10 students can now look forward to an exciting few weeks, with the Proactive Program Week and Work Experience coming up soon — both excellent opportunities for personal development and career exploration.

Semester reports for Year 12 students are already available on Compass, and reports for Years 7–11 will be published on 3rd June.

Junior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

Individual Year 7 classes have been attending the Strathbogie campus near Euroa for camps during terms 1 and 2.  Students have been taking in a scenic walk to the summit of Mt Wombat to take in the sunset.  Further they have been visiting the indoor pool at Benalla and trying some archery with the North Eastern Archery Club.  Students assist with cooking and cleaning back at camp.  School camp is a great opportunity to develop some independence and show some resilience when things like walking or archery get a little bit difficult.  Families can assist with camps by ensuring the permission and medical forms are returned promptly to the school as well as giving their students some exposure to routine household chores.

The Junior Sub School continues to see evidence of inappropriate online behaviour.  Whilst the online environment can be a great space to hang out, communicate and also seek learning opportunities, care needs to be taken.  Students should understand that what is posted online is essentially out there for ever and can be accessed by a variety of players in the community.  If you are uncomfortable about any content or behaviour online, you should be reporting it.  The school is assisting with this through a number of proactive programs, such as Digitial Thumbprint and Brainstorm Productions.  These programs dovetail with the consistent messaging from the school regarding safe behaviour.

The school has been focussing on the use of lockers during term 2.  This has come about because we are seeing many students without a working lock on their locker.  An unlocked locker is simply an invitation to others to examine what is inside, or worse, steal things.  All students are issued a lock in Year 7.  Many students continue to use this same lock all the way to Year 12.  Other students, for a variety of reasons swap out the school issued lock for one of their own.  Whichever lock you are using, it is vital that it is working and used correctly.

Mr Craig Moore – Junior Sub School Leader

Middle School Report

Read Time: ( words)

Term 2 has been a fantastic period of exploration, learning, and leadership for our Year 9 and 10 students, with several enriching excursions and events taking place across a variety of subjects and interests.

Our Year 9 and 10 students recently showcased their sporting spirit at the Rugby Gala Day. The competition was fierce, and our students demonstrated great teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship on the field. It was a wonderful day of high energy and healthy competition, with all teams representing the school with pride.

In the realm of civic education, selected students from both Year 9 and 10 took part in the VSPP Secondary Schools Parliamentary Convention. This was an outstanding opportunity for students to engage in democratic processes, debate real-world issues, and collaborate with students from other schools. Their participation and maturity in discussing complex topics were commendable.

Meanwhile, our Year 9 Advance students visited the Melbourne Aquarium, where they deepened their understanding of marine ecosystems and the importance of environmental conservation. The hands-on learning experience was both informative and inspiring, helping students connect classroom knowledge with real-world marine biology.

Year 10 History students embarked on a meaningful visit to the Holocaust Museum, gaining powerful insights into this significant chapter of world history. Their respectful behaviour and thoughtful reflections made the day especially impactful. Staff at the museum praised our students for their maturity and attentiveness, and we are incredibly proud of the way they represented our school.

We are also thrilled to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Adam Downing, who was selected to participate in the Zoo Conservation Leadership Course. This is a prestigious opportunity that reflects Adam’s passion for wildlife and conservation.

Well done to all our students who participated in these events. Your enthusiasm, curiosity, and exemplary behaviour continue to make our school community proud!

Mr Robert Winduss – Acting Assistant Middle Sub School Leader

Senior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

Term 2 has been a focused and fast-paced time in the Senior Sub School, with our students engaged in a range of academic and milestone experiences. Over the past month, we’ve seen students preparing for assessments, consolidating their learning, and stepping up to meet the demands of senior schooling with resilience and maturity.

Year 12 Progress Reports
Progress Reports for Year 12 students were released on Thursday, 12 June. These reports offer an opportunity for reflection and forward planning. In some cases, students are being invited to have follow-up conversations with their Year Level Coordinators regarding adjustments to their study approach, subject changes, or future pathways. We encourage families to review these reports together and get in touch if further support is needed.

Year 11 Exams
The Year 11 exam period began on Tuesday, 4 June and continued through to Monday, 16 June. We commend the Year 11 cohort for their punctuality, preparedness, and respectful conduct throughout this formal assessment period. Full school uniform and the school’s mobile phone policy continue to apply for all remaining internal assessments this year.

GAT Information Session and GAT Completion
On Tuesday, 10 June, all students undertaking a Unit 3/4 subject attended a GAT Information Session led by Ms Michelle Vieth, VCAA assessor and VCE English teacher. The session gave students an overview of the General Achievement Test and strategies to approach it with confidence. The GAT itself was held statewide on Tuesday, 17 June, and we were pleased to see students approach the test with calm focus and maturity.

Report Writing Day – Friday 20 June
This Friday, 20 June, is Report Writing Day. While most students will not be required on-site, Year 12 English and EAL students will be completing their mid-year practice exam that morning. Staff will also be using the day to finalise reports and continue marking Year 11 exams.

Year 12 Assembly – 23 June
Our next Year 12 Assembly will be held on Monday 23 June, with a focus on preparing for the remaining holiday exams. With the English practice exam already completed, the assembly will help students plan their final weeks of Term 2 and use the upcoming holidays effectively to revise and prepare.

100 Days of Success – 2 July
On Tuesday 2 July, the Year 11s will gather to celebrate 100 Days of Success. This milestone event is an opportunity to recognise individual and collective achievements so far in the school year. Students can expect a positive and light-hearted celebration during school hours. Uniform and regular behaviour expectations still apply.

Year 12 Holiday Practice Exams
Following the English exam on Report Writing Day, Year 12 students will sit their remaining holiday practice exams from Thursday 10 July to Tuesday 15 July. These exams will take place in Nindethana, with some sessions in the Study Centre. Attendance is compulsory, and students should be using the study schedules they developed earlier this term to prepare. These mid-year practice exams are a critical opportunity to build exam stamina, address any learning gaps, and receive targeted feedback ahead of final assessments.

Pride Month

This June SASC celebrated Pride Month. Pride Month is an incredibly important time for our SASC rainbow students and the wider school community. For our LGBTQIA+ students, it’s an important period of recognition, affirmation, and belonging. It creates a safe and inclusive space where they can see themselves reflected, celebrated, and understood, fostering a sense of pride in their identities. This visibility is fundamental for their mental wellbeing, helping to combat feelings of isolation and discrimination. For the wider community, celebrating Pride Month offers an invaluable opportunity to learn, understand, and show solidarity. It educates us on the history of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, highlights ongoing struggles for equality, and reminds us that diversity enriches our community. By actively participating in Pride, we collectively commit to building a more accepting, equitable, and compassionate community for everyone, reinforcing that all members, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, are valued and respected.

In the lead up to Pride Month, we celebrated IDAHOBIT Day, shining a bright light on our rainbow students! It was heart-warming to see so many students come out to support our rainbow community, whether they were getting their faces painted rainbow stylez, striking a pose in our Pride Photo Booth, or waving a rainbow flag with pride and support.
A huge thank you to Brimbank City Council Youth Services for bringing all the fun and games, and a massive shout-out to our amazing VCE-VM and SRC students who organised such a fantastic event! And let’s not forget Mother Earth, who kindly held off winter just a little longer, gifting us those beautiful rays of sunshine that were truly the cherry on top of our rainbow sundae!

National Gallery of Victoria (International)

On 21 May, the Year 9 Art students were accompanied by Mr D’Aglas, Mr Bowden and Mr Siddall for an excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria (International) to study artworks from the Salon et Lumière (the Salon Hang room) and Impressionist paintings. Students discussed the characteristics of paintings that were accepted and refused from the Salon; talking between themselves and sketching details from paintings that interested them. Students also studied how French Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Gustave Caillebotte used light and colour to create painterly compositions, offering an awesome and unbeatable learning experience that transformed what they have learned in art theory classes to interpreting paintings up close. Both Year 9 classes were very well behaved, courteous, and represented SASC with pride. Well done!

Legal Studies – Surpreme Court of Victoria

On Tuesday June 10 and Thursday June 12, the Year 12 Legal Studies students experienced our Victorian criminal justice system in action at the Supreme Court of Victoria! They were able to meet with Supreme Court judges and ask pressing questions about their lives as judges in the Supreme Court, how they became a judge, their most shocking cases and the pathway they took that led them to this point.

After that very rewarding experience, the students were able to watch part of a real life criminal trial in the courtroom. From up in the public gallery they were able to see firsthand the preparation and presentation of the legal practitioners when trying a murder case, as well as the role of the judge and jury in considering and noting down important evidence in the trial.

The Year 12s were also given access to the Supreme Court law library, and finished off their day with the chance to sit in on cases at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court before heading back to St Albans.

It was a very successful excursion and the students represented the SASC community extremely well. A very big thank-you to Ms Nguyen and Mr Lynch for accompanying the classes on their excursion, and to the Supreme Court Justices and workers who gave the students an experience they won’t soon forget!

HWPL & ARK-Vic Character Development Workshops at St Albans Secondary College – PE incursion

In collaboration with ARK-Vic, HWPL Victoria delivered a series of three engaging character development workshops for Year 7 and 8 students at St Albans Secondary College. Aligned with HWPL’s Peace Education principles, the sessions explored ‘My Value and the Value of Others’, ‘Respect’, and ‘Harmony & Diversity’.

Integrated into physical education classes, the workshops combined meaningful discussion with dynamic sports activities and interactive team-building puzzles—allowing students to embody the values they were learning through movement, cooperation, and play.

Students reported growth in areas such as confidence, communication, integrity, conflict resolution, and building positive relationships with peers—especially those they didn’t usually interact with.

> “I really like the HWPL Program because I get to work with people that I never thought I would work with and we get to work with each other and like do teamwork together.” – Angelique 8J
> “We’ve been learning about how we value ourselves and others and respect. And we put them into games and we learn from the games.” –  Johnny 8F
> “I feel like it should be spread to more schools because from what I’ve experienced, it’s a very good thing to do. Just overall, I’ve learned quite a lot of things from this – respect, leadership, and just appreciating the time we have with everyone else.” – James 8J

Teachers found the program both complementary to the existing curriculum and uniquely valuable in addressing social and emotional learning.

> “the program is engaging and really cool, because it mixes physical education with the actual lessons of character building, and I absolutely love it.” – Mr. Asta, Teacher at St Albans SC

These workshops show how character education, when combined with movement and teamwork, can foster a more respectful, confident, and connected school community.

Athletics Carnival at Keilor Parks Athletics Stadium

On May 9th 2025, we held our annual Athletics Carnival at Keilor Parks Athletics Stadium.

Following the success of the Swimming Carnival in March, we had high hopes for what Athletics Day would hold. Our expectations for this day were not let down, as we had a surplus of students eager to participate and join in on the fun!

Our house leaders and captains put their best efforts into making sure the carnival ran smoothly, leading all types of games and competitions. The year 12 VCE VM volunteers worked hard, providing everybody’s favourite quick lunch, sausage sizzle as well as drinks and snacks!

The atmosphere was filled with a fiery competitive spirit as well as cheerful, collaborative passion. As students raced against each other out on the field, we also had people lining up for novelty events run by the house team, ready to score some extra points for their houses. The 4x100m relay was extremely popular as usual, with many individuals joining forces to represent their house across the year levels. Tug of war was by far the most popular event, with both staff and students engaging in this test of strength. Other notable activities included the bean bag toss, hoola hooping, and hacky sack.

Field events like javelin and shot put were a blast to watch, with many getting impressive distances. The day ended with relay – a collaborative and entertaining match. Athletics was full of fun, laughter and incredible sportsmanship. Thank you and congratulations to all those who participated in games, events and competitions.

Overall, we enjoyed being able to help out and involve ourselves. We look forward to holding more fun events for students to participate in. Stay tuned to see what we have planned for later this year! 😉

Carnival Spirit: A Day to Remember

As Irwin House Captain and a Year 12 VCE VM student, I can honestly say the Athletics Carnival was one of the best days of the year—and a definite highlight of my final year at school.

From the moment we arrived, there was a real buzz across the oval. While most students were in their school uniform or PE kit, the house captains and leaders stood out in our house colours, ready to bring the energy and lead the way. You could feel the excitement as students got involved in events, supported their mates, and made the most of the day.

I spent a lot of the day helping out at the discus event and assisting in the house captain area, which gave me a great opportunity to see how things ran behind the scenes. It felt awesome to be part of the action—not just cheering on Irwin, but helping make sure everything flowed smoothly and everyone felt supported.

Some of my favourite moments were watching the relays. The cheering was unreal—students lined the track, hyping up every runner and celebrating each finish. The energy was contagious, and it showed just how much house pride everyone had. And then there was the tug-of-war, which turned into an epic staff vs. student showdown. Safe to say, there was no shortage of friendly rivalry—and a whole lot of laughter.

Leading Irwin on the day was something I’m really proud of. It meant a lot to be someone the younger students could look up to and rely on, whether they needed help with their event or just a bit of encouragement. There was this awesome sense of connection across year levels, and it reminded me why I love being part of this school community.

There were definitely standout performances—some impressive throws and jumps, and serious speed in the sprints. But what really stood out was the spirit. It wasn’t just about winning; it was about effort, encouragement, and everyone having a go. That’s what made it so memorable.

A massive thank you to all the other house captains and leaders who helped bring the day together. And of course, shoutout to everyone who participated, helped out, or just brought the vibes—you made the day what it was. I feel lucky to have been part of it all in my final year, and I’m excited to see how the next Irwin leaders keep that spirit alive.

SEAL Parent Information Night – 22 May 2025

On 22 May 2025 St Albans Secondary College hosted our annual SEAL Parent Information Night. At the start we were served with amazing refreshments by Ms. Karner and the VET year-12 students. We then saw the first act of the night: a passionate debate between year-8 and year 9 SEAL students about a topic chosen by them ‘Social media and safety online’. This debate went on for about 10 minutes. We were then called on to take our seats and were entertained by Mr. Tuan Le on his acoustic guitar. The magical sound of guitar set the stage for Tiana Stepanovski who gave us beautiful rendition of two songs: ‘Can’t help falling in Love’ and ‘The Winner takes it All’.

Ms. Janet McKenzie then warmly welcomed all parents and guests on the night, followed by Mr. Ly’s and Ms. Lee’s short presentation on the features of our SEAL program. We were then introduced to the three inspiring speakers on the night: Lani Nguyen, Anthony Tran and Maybel Verma, who took turn to speak for about 7 minutes each. These speakers were ex-SEAL students at St Albans Secondary College, who graduated in 2018, 2022 and 2024 respectively. Their ATARs range from 99.60 to 99.85. Anthony was one of the 30 Premiers’ Award winners in 2022, who is also the winner of a scholarship from Melbourne University worth about $100k. Lani is now a profession lawyer at the law firm Corrs Chalmers and WestGarth and Maybel is preparing to enter Melbourne Uni to study Medicine. It was unbelievable to see these three ex-SEAL students and hear them speak about their personal experiences at our St Albans Secondary College, and their life journey after high school. The night ended with many SEAL students being presented with Leadership, Academic Excellence and Integrity Awards by the three guest speakers.

It was an unforgettable night for many of us SEAL students at St Albans Secondary college. Thanks to Mr. Thach Ly and all the staff at SASC who have organised this wonderful event.

Debating Teams Do St Albans Proud in Close-Fought Online Competition

On Wednesday, 7th May, our Year 9 and Year 10 debating teams represented St Albans Secondary College in a spirited online debate against Sacred Heart College and Hume Central College.

Both teams came well-prepared, showcasing impressive teamwork, critical thinking, and persuasive speaking. Despite the virtual setting, our students maintained focus and delivered their arguments with clarity and confidence.

The Year 9 team—Lina, Phuoc, and Erica—did an outstanding job in their very first debate, especially considering they were up against more experienced Year 10 students.

Our Year 10 team—Api, Xai, and Eze—gave a passionate and polished performance, narrowly losing by just 2 points in an extremely close competition.

After the debates, everyone enjoyed some well-earned pizza together, celebrating the hard work and camaraderie of the afternoon. Congratulations to all involved—you represented St Albans with pride!
