As this is our first Alba for 2026, we would like to welcome everyone back.

This year we have a number of new staff who are settling well into our Community.

Our new Year 7 students have made an excellent transition into SASC. They report feeling happy and supported at the College. We welcome all of them and their families.

We would also like to welcome those students and families who have started at the College in other year levels. We hope you have a successful time here.

Lunar New Year

For those who celebrate it we would like to extend our warmest wishes to you and your families as you celebrate Tết Nguyên Đán (Lunar New Year).

Tết is a time of renewal, gratitude, and hope — a time to honour family, ancestors, and the values that guide us into the year ahead. We deeply value the rich cultural heritage of our Vietnamese families and the many ways it strengthens and enriches our school community.

As we welcome the new year, the Year of the Horse, we wish you and your loved one’s good health, happiness, prosperity, and success. May the year ahead bring peace, joy, and many opportunities for your children to continue learning, growing, and thriving.

Thank you for the strong partnership you share with our school. We look forward to continuing to work together in the coming year.

Chúc mừng năm mới!

Whole School Assembly

We held our first whole school assembly for 2026 on Monday 9 February, formally welcoming our Year 7 cohort into the St Albans School Community. The morning celebration took place in the covered outdoor learning space, with approximately 1,900 students and staff in attendance.

At this assembly, we not only welcomed our Year 7 students, but also all new staff and students, along with their families. Whole school assemblies are an important part of our calendar and long-standing traditions. They provide an opportunity for us to come together as one community, strengthening connections, particularly with our newest Year 7 students.

The assembly began with Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elder, Annette Schiberis, who delivered a Welcome to Country and shared insights into the rich history and culture of the traditional custodians of our land and surrounds.

Throughout the morning, we celebrated and acknowledged examples of student leadership and excellence across a range of areas. We were treated to student and staff musical performances and received an overview of our outstanding 2025 VCE and VCE VM achievements.

Our School Captains, Josephine Mai and Stephanie Truong, formally welcomed our newest students. Year 7 representatives, Nhat Anh Le and Ayden Tran, responded on behalf of the cohort. The 2026 Year 7 scholarship recipients were also introduced and presented with certificates by College Principal, Mr Craig Jennings, and School Council President, Dr Tracy Nero.

Students were reminded of the annual Student Recognition Prize, an iPad awarded to one student from each sub-school who exemplifies our school values of Respect, Integrity, Leadership and Excellence. Recipients must also maintain over 90% attendance and consistently demonstrate behaviour aligned with our expectations.

This was the first of our whole school events for 2026, and we look forward to the many opportunities ahead to gather as a community. These shared traditions strengthen our collective identity and reinforce our commitment to Connect, Protect and Respect (CPR).

Focus Days and Valentine’s Day

It has been a busy and exciting start to the year for the Senior Sub School, highlighted by the Year 12 Focus Days and our vibrant Valentine’s Day celebrations.

Year 12 students spent two productive days preparing for the year ahead at University College, a residential student campus of University of Melbourne. The program featured a study session presented by 2024 graduate Deniz Dayman, who is now studying engineering at University of Melbourne on a full scholarship. Deniz shared inspiring and practical advice, encouraging students to put themselves out there, ask questions, and make the most of every opportunity this year. He emphasised the importance of stepping outside your comfort zone, maintaining a positive mindset, breaking study into manageable chunks, and keeping a “mistake book” to learn from errors and avoid repeating them.

English and EAL students also participated in a specialised workshop led by teachers Louise Bryant and Jeanette Coloca, a VCAA assessor, gaining valuable insights into Section B Crafting Texts and strategies for success. Meanwhile, VCE VM students took part in a group challenge, and all students enjoyed team building games and activities at Princes Park.

On the second day, students toured either RMIT University or the University of Melbourne, gaining a glimpse into future study pathways. The program concluded with a screening of Anaconda at HOYTS, providing a fun and relaxed finish to two rewarding days. We were very proud of the way all students conducted themselves over the two days and look forward to seeing how they develop over their final year at school.

On Friday 13 February, the Year 12 VCE VM students organised a highly successful Valentine’s Day celebration. The event featured a range of fun activities, delicious food, and lively bands, creating a wonderful atmosphere across the school. It was fantastic to see so many students coming together to celebrate and enjoy the occasion. Congratulations to the VCE VM Year 12 class on their first successful event in 2026.

Thank you also to all members of the Senior Sub School for their outstanding coordination and support in delivering these two very successful events.

NAPLAN

The 2026 National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be administered to students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 from Wednesday 11 March to Monday 23 March 2026.

The National Assessment Program (NAPLAN) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. The tests assess the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards.

Students will be provided with clear strategies to help them approach and complete the test with confidence, and they will be supported throughout the entire process. Further information will be communicated via Compass closer to the date.

Attendance and Punctuality

We are very proud of our strong data in terms of student attendance and will continue to have this as a focus throughout the year.  All members of the school community play a role in supporting students to be on time to school every day. Research shows that high attendance is one of the crucial factors ensuring student success.  As well as attending school every day, it is critical we teach students to be on time to all their classes.

Being on time matters because:

  • It ensures students are prepared for learning and sets them up for success.
  • When students are late it disrupts their learning, the teacher’s teaching and the learning of others. Being on time shows students have respect for other people and that they care about other people’s time as much as their own
  • It demonstrates that students are diligent and dependable and care about their learning
  • It indicates that students honour their commitments and can be trusted
  • It sets a good example to others
  • It prepares students for success in the real world

Being late just 10 minutes a day adds up to over 17 days of learning across 13 years of school!  Missing one day of school a week, which is equivalent to 80% attendances adds up to missing over 2.5 years of learning across a student’s schooling life. Even a 90% attendance (missing one day a fortnight) adds up to missing 1.5 years of learning across 13 years of school.  That is a lot of missed learning.

Our attendance target is for every student to exceed 90% attendance. It is no coincidence that our most successful Year 12 VCE and VCE-VM students over the last 5 years have all had very high attendance rates. For students and families to find out attendance percentages, talk to your Coordinator or look at your Semester report. We will also be sending out a regular email each term to help you track your attendance and stay above 90%.

If families need support regarding attendance, please reach out to the relevant Coordinator for a meeting, so we can discuss the supports that can be put in place to strengthen attendance and punctuality.

New Staff at St Albans Secondary College

Read Time: ( words)

Shane Yin

Dear St Albans Secondary College Community,

My name is Shane, and I am very excited to be joining the SASC community as an English and EAL teacher in 2026.

I was born and raised in China and my first languages are Mandarin and Cantonese. I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in China and during my studies I was fortunate to receive a scholarship from the Chinese government, which allowed me to study in Wellington, New Zealand for half a year. This unforgettable experience inspired me to pursue further study and work overseas, which ultimately brought me to Australia.

I am truly looking forward to beginning my teaching journey at SASC. My goal is to build positive, supportive rapport with all my students and to encourage them as they grow, learn and work towards their own success.

Ashleigh Janky

Hey everyone, my name is Miss Janky and I am the new Drama and VM teacher at St Albans. I have been a teacher for over 5 years now and love helping young people learn new experiences and information they can use in the real world. I am passionate about student wellbeing and previously worked as the Year 12 Coordinator at my pervious school where I had over 300 students in a year level!

Outside of school I love to work in community theatre helping to produce shows and I am also a dancer who loves to still take classes as an adult. I am so excited to join the St Albans community and have loved meeting so many lovely students so far.

Lanxi Hu

Hi everyone! My name is Lanxi, you can call me Lancy. I’m very excited to be starting my teaching career here at St Albans Secondary College as a Maths teacher. I’m passionate about making maths enjoyable and helping students build confidence in their learning, and I’m looking forward to growing alongside the school community.

When I’m not in the classroom, you’ll usually find me spending time with my dog, going for walks, or relaxing with family and friends. I’m incredibly excited to be part of the St Albans SC team and already feel so welcomed – the students are lovely and the staff are friendly and supportive. I can’t wait for the journey ahead!

Minha Kwon

Hello! My name is Minha Kwon, and I am a new Maths and Science teacher at St Albans Secondary College. I have a background in Medical Science and am passionate about making maths and science engaging, relevant, and accessible for all students.

I grew up in Adelaide and have always loved being near the beautiful beaches of South Australia, so in my spare time I enjoy going to the beach and soaking up the sun.

I’m incredibly grateful to be part of the SASC community and am looking forward to getting to know our students and supporting their learning at our college.

Zoe Tranter

Hi, my name is Zoe Tranter, I am a new teacher at SASC. I teach EAL, English, VCE VM, Humanities, and Maths. I love my job and have been a teacher for ten years.

In my spare time, I like to do sports: I swim, do ballroom dancing and play basketball. More recently, I have started playing water polo. I also enjoy reading fantasy and literary fiction and trying new foods.

I am looking forward to getting to know students and staff better over the year.

Josh Tejedor

My Name is Josh Tejedor, I am very excited to be joining the St Albans Secondary college team as a Food Studies teacher in 2026. I have taught the subject across all years and look forward to developing cooking skills, kitchen confidence and knowledge of diet and nutrition within the school.

In the few short weeks I have been at St Albans, I have been blown away by how welcoming and kind all students and staff have been. I feel incredibly honoured to be able to join such a successful and passionate team.

Outside of teaching my main interests are cooking, movies and being awful at golf. This year is a particularly exciting one as my wife and I are expecting our first child in March.

I look forward to meeting and working with you all.

Leah Stavrou

Hi, my name is Leah and I am extremely grateful to be beginning my teaching career at St. Albans Secondary College. I am part of the Science team and am excited to join the very welcoming community at the college.

I am passionate about the wellbeing and achievement of my students. Outside of the science classroom I love music and the arts, and I am always open for a chat!

With the short time I have spent at the college, I already know it is going to be a successful year, and I look forward to it!

Michael Doyle

I am an English and Humanities teacher with 18 years’ experience. I find teaching rewarding, and I particularly enjoy teaching great literature such as Shakespeare plays and contemporary poetry.

My hobby is playing music; my favourite instrument is bass guitar. I am grateful to the St Albans Secondary College community for the warm welcome I have received this year. I look forward to supporting students to achieve their educational goals.

Jennifer Dillon

My name is Jen Dillon, and I’m very excited to be joining SASC as a Legal Studies and Humanities teacher in 2026. After a break from classroom teaching since mid-2023, I’m loving being back and have been so impressed with the school so far.

Over the past two years, I’ve been living and working in Darwin – first as a Community Educator with Legal Aid NT, and then in a program supporting First Nations people into careers in science and health with the Menzies School of Health Research. Prior to that, I taught at Loreto College Ballarat for 16 years.

I have four adult children who all live in Melbourne, so I’m very happy to be able to see them more often now I’ve followed them down here! I’m thrilled to be back in the classroom in such a great community and look forward to getting to know everyone.

Sarah Burke

Hi 🙂 I’m Sarah, the new Junior Sub School admin and, yes, I am Patrick Burke’s daughter. I was a little nervous about starting at St Albans because I’ve never worked in a school before, but I feel very fortunate to be starting my school career in such a fantastic and diverse community. The staff I’ve met have all been friendly and exceptionally helpful (special thanks to Dee and the Reception ladies!) and it is so heartening to be surrounded by people who clearly care about helping children to succeed and thrive.

I studied politics and development studies/anthropology at the University of Melbourne and completed a diploma of Indonesian before moving to Hanoi for about six months to intern at Vietnam Television. If you speak Vietnamese or Indonesian or Lao, please practice with me because I’m a little rusty. I also welcome improvised lessons in any other languages you might be able to teach me, and I can teach you Thai in return!

I’m trying to get to know the western suburbs better so I will very gratefully accept any recommendations for local hangouts. Feel free to stop me for a chat, especially if it’s about film, theatre, linguistics, dependency theory, and girl groups and boybands 🙂

See you around!

Daniel Micallef

Hi everyone, my name is Daniel Micallef, and I am very excited to be joining St Albans Secondary College this year. I have worked in secondary education for many years as a Leading Teacher in wellbeing and Learning Specialist working with families and students who have diverse needs, as well as a classroom teacher.

I have a strong focus on student wellbeing, engagement and curriculum development. I teach a range of subjects including Health and PE, History, Humanities, Outdoor Education and Food Studies. I am particularly passionate about Food Studies, cooking and helping young people build lifelong healthy habits, develop cooking skills and gain confidence to contribute to cooking at home.

I am really looking forward to being part of the St Albans community, building positive relationships with students, staff and families, and contributing to a supportive and inclusive school environment. Outside of school I am married, and we are expecting our first child mid-year which is very exciting. I coach and play soccer, enjoy cooking, travelling, sport and spending time with family and friends. I am excited to get to know everyone and look forward to many great years ahead.

Junior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

Welcome back to the whole school community from the Junior Sub School team.  In particular we would like to welcome those who are new to our school community in 2026.

The year has commenced with the usual level of organised chaos.  We are very excited to have 271 new year 7 students joining us.  It has been very pleasing to see the way the new students have settled into school.  This was no more evident than in the very first year level assembly when almost all of the students calmly found their correct class and filed dutifully into the Performing Arts Centre.  We understand that many of our young people were nervous about joining the new school, but they showed great resilience as they negotiated the trials of the new timetable, lockers, moving classes between periods and making new friends.  Well done Year 7s.

The new Year 7s were officially welcome to the school at the Whole School Assembly on 9 February.  Each of our 12 classes filed into the Covered Outdoor Learning Area to the applause of the balance of the student body.  This can be a daunting experience, but our students were on their best behaviour and showed that they will be a year level to be proud of.  On behalf of the year 7s, Ayden Tran and Nhat-Anh Le acknowledged the welcome and spoke to the student experience of being in year 7.  Both students spoke exceedingly well.

There are two critical events coming up for the Junior School students.  The Year 7 Student Expo and Information night is on 24 February at 6pm.  All Year 7 students together with their parents, carers and guardians are invited to attend in order to meet with their core subject teachers and see some of the work that students have been completing.  This is a great opportunity to make a strong connection between school and home and so we strongly encourage all students, parents, carers and guardians to attend.  Later in the term we have the Swimming Carnival at Oak Park Pool.  This is held on 2 March.  Note that the competitive swimming aspect of the day is not compulsory, but there are plenty of opportunities to have some water based fun activities, such as the water slide and pool volleyball.

The Junior Sub School team thanks parents, carers and guardians for the support and encouragement that they offer their young people and we understand that by working together we can achieve the best possible outcomes.

Mr Craig Moore – Junior Sub School Leader

Middle School Report

Read Time: ( words)

As we begin a brand-new year, the Middle School would like to welcome back all students, especially those who are moving up from Junior School. A warm welcome also to all new students and families to the St Albans Secondary College community.

Middle School students have started the year prepared for learning. Co-ordinators have been impressed by students’ organisation, effort and enthusiasm towards their learning. Year 9 students are in the process of meeting with their co-ordinators to ensure and questions or concerns are addressed early, and Year 10 students are enjoying the opportunity to study an increased number of elective subjects, compared to 2025.

Throughout week 4 and 5, Year 9 students will be completing the Morrisby Career Guidance Counselling assessment. The program supports student career pathways, identifies student strengths and encourages students to think about their interests.

This term, Year 9 students will participate in an informative session presented by the Pat Cronin Foundation. This session will support students with conflict management and provide strategies on how to prevent senseless violence, while Year 10 students will participate in the Proactive Policing presentation.

The Middle School would like to congratulate all Year 9 and 10 students on a strong start to 2026 and wish them a successful year.

Our senior students have had an excellent start to the new school year. Our teachers report that students have engaged well in all their classes and have set a positive tone for the year ahead.

Our Year 12 Parent Information Evening was held on Wednesday 18 February 2026. Thank you to all parents and students who attended a very informative evening. The Year 11 Parent Information evening will run in a fortnight, on Wednesday 4 March, starting at 6:00pm.

The students enjoyed the sunshine as they participated in team building outdoor activities at Princes Park. The VCE and VCE VM students experienced a variety of presentations from guest speakers, including past student, Deniz Daymen, who presented an informative session on study skills, and Ms Bryant and Ms. Coloca who ran an important English workshop for the VCE students. The VCE VM students worked on organisational and teambuilding skills with Ms Woods and Ms Gough. Mr Jennings, our College Principal, continued the St Albans Secondary College tradition of reading the Dr. Seuss classic, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” to the Year 12 students. On the second day, students attended a Melbourne University tour or RMIT University visit and were treated to a movie at Melbourne Central. Overall, they had a great time working together and connecting outside of school. The students are to be commended on their enthusiasm, excellent behaviour and the way they conducted themselves across the two days.

We have a very active and committed group of students working with our SRC this year. The School Captains for this year are Josephine Mai and Stephanie Truong, and they are supported by the rest of the Leadership team, Mitchell Cauchi, Angelina Huynh, Tina Le, Tamara Penaia Te’o, Richard To and Lachlan Tran. We are in the process of selecting Year 11 SRC representatives. We would like to congratulate our student leaders for representing our student body and look forward to working with them.

We have a team-building day planned for the Year 11 students this term. VCE VM

The year has started well with students eager to begin their new VET courses and finalising their work placements. We have many industries being explored this year with students involved in a range of VET placements from Hospitality, Building and Construction, Fashion, Community services, Hair and Beauty and Music to name a few.

Year 12 VCE VM students delighted the school community with Valentine’s Day lunchtime activities on Friday 13 February. Students worked extremely hard over a short time frame to entertain students with a barbeque, sweets, drinks, Valentines Day merchandise and more. The purpose of the event was to celebrate all kinds of love in our community.

Fresh roses were available for sale. Students participated in a raffle to win a Valentine’s Day hamper, listened to music and enjoyed the activities.

The proceeds from the Valentines’ Day event will go towards the VCE VM program to fund project resources.

Lots of community events are planned for our VCE VM students this year and we will keep you informed as activities take place.

Japan Study Tour 2025

Read Time: ( words)

On 29 November 2025, 14 students and 3 staff embarked on our third study tour to Japan. The biggest difference between previous tours and this tour is the opportunity of experiencing homestay at a high school in Japan.

We began our adventure with visiting many beautiful historical sites in Kyoto, such as Nijo Castle, the Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji), Kiyomizu temple and Fushimi Inari Shrine. We also travelled to Hiroshima and visited the Peace Park and Peace Memorial Museum where we learnt what exactly happened in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. Before leaving Hiroshima, we didn’t forget eating Hiroshima’s famous okonomiyaki which was incredible! Next day we headed to Osaka and spent most of the day at Universal Studio Japan. We enjoyed all the attractions and thrilling rides they offer. This was following by visiting famous Dotonbori in the evening where we had a taste of a variety of amazing street food such as takoyaki and ramen!!

On Day 5, we hopped on bullet train and travelled to Toyohashi to commence our 5-day homestay program. Mr Jennings joined us in Toyohashi who came all the way from Melbourne to support this very first homestay program. 800 Toyohashi Minami Senior High students warmly welcomed us at the welcome assembly, and our students were able to experience daily Japanese life with their host family and participate in regular school activities for 5 days. Our students not only participated in their regular classes such as Japanese, English, Maths, PE, Art etc. but also joined some of the cultural clubs to experience traditional flower arrangement and tea ceremony. Some of our students even had a chance to participate in a Chikuwa making workshop where they made a traditional Japanese, tube-shaped fish cake. Students from both schools formed their friendship very quickly but sadly we had to say goodbye to them on our last day in Toyohashi.

After Toyohashi, we boarded a bullet train to our final destination, Tokyo. The first day in Tokyo was spent visiting Harajuku where we explored some of the trendy fashion stores and tasted ‘Harajuku crapes,’ and later we walked through the famous scramble crossing of Shibuya in the evening. Next day we visited Sensoji Temple and Tokyo Skytree in the morning and spent the rest of the day on shopping in Akihabara. On our last day in Tokyo, all students were able to try an earthquake simulator and learn about how to stay safe during emergencies at the Ikebukuro Safety Learning Centre. Our last dinner in Tokyo was at Sushiro (one of the best sushi train restaurants) and ate to our heart’s content there!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Lee, Ms D’Elton, Mr Jennings for their support and all of our students who were a pleasure to travel with. I am certain that they will treasure all of the wonderful memories and friendships that they formed during our time in Japan. The next study tour to Japan will take place in December 2027.

English – Year 7

Read Time: ( words)

Our Year 7 students have made a wonderful start to the 2026 school year. It was a pleasure to officially welcome them to our school community at our first whole-school assembly, where they were warmly greeted by both staff and students.

Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone, and our students have embraced the transition with enthusiasm and confidence as they navigate new classrooms, meet new teachers, and build new friendships. It has been fantastic to see how quickly they have settled in and how positively they are engaging in their classes.

We are especially proud of the way they are already demonstrating and upholding the values of St Albans Secondary College in their first few weeks. Their positive attitude and willingness to get involved have been a joy to witness.

The students have made an exceptional start to their learning in English with the introduction of narrative writing in preparation for the upcoming NAPLAN testing. It has been an enjoyable experience to read the students’ stories, which showcase their vivid and quirky imaginations.

The Year 7 students have also been introduced to our new Accountable Independent Reading program in the library, which takes place once a week. This reading program gives students the choice of three books — Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Holes, and Hatchet — each accompanied by tailored booklets designed to enhance their vocabulary and comprehension skills.

We look forward to meeting parents and guardians at our Year 7 Expo on the evening of 24 February as we continue to build strong partnerships to support our students throughout the year. We wish our Year 7 students every success and happiness for the remainder of the year

Year 9 Advance 2026 Begin Camp Preparations

The Year 9 Advance class of 2026 has officially begun preparing for their first camp experience, while also starting their Bronze Medallion training as part of the program.

Students took part in hands-on practice sessions focused on pitching tents, organising equipment, and working together in small groups. These activities allowed students to build essential outdoor skills while developing teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

As students begin their Bronze Medallion, they are also learning the importance of water safety, responsibility, and leadership — key components of both the Advance program and upcoming camp experiences. The practical sessions helped students gain confidence, support one another, and take initiative in unfamiliar situations.

This marks an exciting start to the Year 9 Advance journey in 2026, with students already demonstrating strong collaboration and a willingness to challenge themselves as they prepare for camp and future learning opportunities.

The House Program has officially begun for 2026, with students coming together for an exciting and positive start to the year.

During the session, students were presented with their House badges, marking their official membership and sense of belonging within their House teams. Time was also spent planning for the first Swimming Carnival, with students learning about upcoming events and how they can contribute to their House’s success.

Students were introduced to their roles and expectations for 2026, highlighting the importance of leadership, teamwork, and participation across all House activities. It was great to see students engaging with one another, asking questions, and showing enthusiasm as they met new House members and staff.

The atmosphere throughout the session was full of positive energy, with students excited to get involved and support their Houses throughout the year. This strong start sets a great foundation for a successful and spirited House program in 2026.

Debating Program

Debating Club Opens the 2026 Season with Great Momentum

The first debating meeting was held on Tuesday 10 February and was met with a great turnout and even better vibes. There was strong interest in interschool debating, with thoughtful questions raised and key information covered.

The session concluded with a fun exhibition debate, where—somehow—dogs were ultimately proven to be better pets than cats. Allen Cheung adjudicated the debate, offering insightful observations and constructive feedback throughout. Kevin Lam opened strongly for the affirmative team, while Dennis Ha presented clear and well-structured arguments for the cats. However, Allen ultimately awarded the win to the dogs.

Overall, it was a highly engaging start and it’s shaping up to be a very promising year for the debating program.
