100 Days of Success – Year 11

At the end of Term Two, we celebrated a significant milestone, our Year 11 students’ 100 days of success in their senior school journey. The event recognised the dedication and achievements of our students with a range of awards, delicious catering, and vibrant entertainment from student bands and the talented illusionist Duck Cameron. Throughout the year, our Year 11 cohort has shown remarkable commitment to developing the skills, mindset, and resilience needed for success in Year 12 and beyond. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing all they will accomplish in the future.

Celebrating Strong Attendance and a Continued Focus on Success

Congratulations to the 300+ students who achieved 100% attendance in Semester 1! These students were recognised with extra house points and enjoyed a celebratory sausage sizzle and extended lunch break in recognition of their commitment. Students with attendance above 95%, and all those who met our minimum benchmark of 90%, also earned house points for their efforts.

At our school, attendance and punctuality remain key priorities because we know that attending every day and being on time are among the most important factors for student success. Every minute in class matters: being late disrupts learning, impacts others, and undermines the development of strong habits. Just 10 minutes late each day adds up to over 17 days of lost learning across 13 years of school. Missing a day a fortnight (90% attendance) adds up to 1.5 years of missed learning – critical time that can’t be replaced.

Our goal is for every student to exceed 95% attendance, and we know that our most successful VCE and VCE-VM students consistently achieve this benchmark. Families can track attendance through coordinators, semester reports, and regular emails sent home. If your child needs support to improve attendance or punctuality, please contact their Coordinator to discuss tailored strategies that can help.

Improving NAPLAN Results

All Year 7 and Year 9 students have now received their NAPLAN results. We are proud to share that in every area assessed, for both Year 7 and Year 9, our students have outperformed similar and network schools. In fact, in all but one area, our results exceed the state average. Beyond these overall achievements, there are many individual success stories worth celebrating.

At the Year 9 assembly on August 4, numerous students received certificates recognizing their excellent growth since Year 7. This is a significant milestone, as it is the first time the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has issued such certificates.

It is also important to highlight the outstanding 2025 Victorian NAPLAN results, which were the best in the country. Victoria ranked first or second in 18 out of 20 measures, far ahead of any other state or territory. Our school is particularly proud to contribute to these exceptional results.

MAC Production: Spamalot

This year’s production of Spamalot (Monty Python Schools Edition) will take place from August 20 to 22 at the Bowery Theatre. The cast and crew have been working tirelessly to deliver a fantastic show. Tickets are available—please check the details in this newsletter—and we encourage everyone to come along and support our talented students and staff.

Progress Reports

Year 12 progress reports are now available on Compass. Year 11 reports will be published on August 22, and Years 7 to 10 reports on September 5. Students were encouraged during this week’s assemblies to stay on top of their work this semester and to meet all deadlines to ensure continued success.

Work Experience Year 10

Towards the end of Term 2, 23-27 June, we ran a very successful Year 10 Work Experience Program. We know that this experience greatly assists students to develop essential skills linked to time management and independence. This year we again ran a program at school for those unable to secure a work placement that provided insights and information about careers and securing employment.  Congratulations to the careers team for the running of the onsite program and also for the wonderful job they did in supporting the students to find employment and complete their OHS tasks to enable them to participate in a work placement.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the students for their efforts to gain a work placement and the staff for supporting the program and visiting students or supporting the running of the work experience sessions at school.  We also thank Nicole Gurd for organising the alumni presentations, and the alumni who gave up their time to present to students and answer their questions.  We greatly appreciate and value the support of all the businesses, both local and further afield, who support our students with their work placements.  These connections contribute to building the broader school community.

It is a very worthwhile program for all of Year 10 whether they complete a placement at a workplace, or the school-based program onsite.  Well done to all involved.

Course Counselling and Subject Selection for Students in Years 9 -11

We recently ran the course selection days for Year 11 moving into Year 12 and Year 10 moving into Year 11 for 2026.  The Year 9 course counselling day was held on Tuesday 5 August.

These days allow us to provide every student with individual counselling regarding their pathway options so they can finalise subject selection. Students each have individual interviews with a year level coordinator or member of the pathways team.  During the information sessions and interviews, students receive information to assist them to make informed decisions about subjects they should study aligned with their interests, course and career aspirations.

The care and thorough approach given to this process is a credit to the Careers/Pathways and Sub School Teams.  The intensive work this involves is done with passion and integrity by all staff who support and assist students to make these decisions, in the knowledge they will have the support of all those at the school to achieve success.

We wish all our students well with course selection and thank all the staff and parents involved for their support in this process, in particular the pathways team lead by Ms Cathy Armstrong, for their organisation and the support provided to students and staff during this process.

New Staff at St Albans Secondary College

Read Time: ( words)

Prakhar Verma

My name is Prakhar. I am starting as a Science/Maths teacher at St Albans in Term 3.

I have been working as a teacher for over 6 years now and have previously worked in Australia, UK and Sweden as well.

I was born in India and still have my family over there, but I have been in Australia for over 13 years.

In my spare time I like watching sports or exploring museums/art galleries. I also enjoy travelling different countries and places and have been to 14 countries so far.

David Logue

My name is David Logue and I am excited to join St Albans Secondary College. I will be teaching Humanities in the year 8, 9 and 10 cohorts.

Originally from Western Australia, I have taught a range of subjects for the past twenty years. The staff and students have been very welcoming, and it is pleasing to see the diverse range of activities that are available at our school.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the coming months.

Junior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

Term 3 promises to be a busy time in the Junior Sub School.  The Year 8 classes have commenced their camp program at Strathbogie.  Whilst school camp is always fun and exciting, at this time of year Strathbogie can be quite cold.  There are even occasional reports of snowfall!  Could we ask that in addition to the usual packing list, an extra jumper, a beanie and maybe a scarf should also be packed.  The camp is self-catered, so students will be assisting in cooking and cleaning.  These are useful life skills which can also be practiced at home.

The upcoming term is relatively short at only nine weeks long.  Teaching and learning is highly focused in this time.  We are aided by the fact that there are only two non-teaching days – a Curriculum Day on 8 August and the Parent Teacher Interviews on 17 September.  As always it is very important that students are prepared for every class.  This includes bringing a charged laptop, a diary, textbooks and stationery to every class.

The Federal Government’s social media ban will come into effect in December of this year.  This will effectively remove the account of anybody under 16 years of age to a range of social media websites.  All of our Junior School students will be impacted by this.  Whilst the main obligation for managing this is with the website operators, it is clearly incumbent on all members of the community to be aware of the law and take appropriate steps to comply.

Finally, tickets to ‘Spamalot’, the MAC production for 2025 are now on sale.  The show runs from 20-22 August at the Bowery Theatre, St Albans. This promises to be a great night and the whole cast and crew would love to see you there.

Middle School Report

Read Time: ( words)

A warm welcome to our Middle School families and students. We hope the term break has been safe and restful for all our students, who have a busy term ahead of them.

We started Week 1 with a parent information evening for all Year 10 students and families. It was wonderful to see the gymnasium full, as Cathy Armstrong and the Middle School team spoke about the Course Counselling and Year 11 subject selection process for 2026. Students are busy considering their pathways as they prepare their subject selection forms. On Thursday 31 July students attended their Course Counselling interview with their coordinator, to discuss their subject choices. On behalf of the Middle School, I’d like to thank Cathy Armstrong and her team for the dedication and work required to ensure our students are best prepared when making decisions about their future.

Year 10 students finished Term 2 with a busy calendar, as they finished their semester exams, participated in the Proactive Programs and completed the Work Experience program. The Proactive Programs provided students with the opportunity to participate in a number of sessions, from cooking, CV writing and self-defence and many more. The Programs were supported by several staff who supervised or ran sessions. I’d like to thank the entire Middle School Team, Wellbeing Team, Principal Class and staff that shared their skills, knowledge and time to make this a very successful week. We ended the week with a celebratory assembly, where student success was showcased. Congratulations to all who received an award!

The Middle School would like to congratulate Joshua Gacovski, Braiden Greenall and Aaron Surace for their completion and graduation from the AGA Trade Taster course in Semester 1. The students attended the offsite program one day a week where they fostered their knowledge and skills in four trade areas. All students worked tirelessly throughout the semester and have placed themselves in a strong position to excel in their chosen trade.

Year 9 students also participated in the Course Counselling program in Week 2, where they chose their subjects for Year 10 2026. The Morrisby Testing and support from the Careers team was vital in this decision for students. We look forward to working with students and families to ensure their success as they move into Year 10 and beyond.

Semester 1 reports were made available thorough Compass at the end of Term 2. Coordinators have been contacting families to discuss these results, and we continue to encourage all students to check their reports. An important part of growth is ensuring we reflect on our efforts and goals and adjust them as we move forward.

As we enter the second half of the year, we want to wish all families a safe and warm start to Term 3 and congratulate all students on their efforts so far this year.

It was heartwarming to return from Long Service Leave and see such a positive and focused atmosphere across the Senior Sub School. I’d like to commend our students for a smooth and settled start to Term 3. Their engagement, behaviour, and readiness to learn are a credit to them, and we look forward to a productive and successful term ahead.

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Mr Matthew Olthof for stepping into the role of Sub School Leader during my absence, Ms Laura Gough as Assistant Sub School Leader, and Mr Pat Lac in his role as Year Level Coordinator. Their leadership and dedication ensured a positive and well-supported environment for our students through to the end of Term 2.

We are pleased to welcome Mr Pat Lac back to the Senior Sub School later this term while Mr Sean Ryan is on leave.

Last term was filled with a variety of engaging and enriching experiences for our students. Below are some of the highlights.

Victorian Careers Expo

On Friday, 16 May, our Year 11 students attended the Victorian Careers Expo at Flemington Showgrounds, providing them with the opportunity to explore a wide range of post-secondary school pathways. Students engaged with representatives from universities, TAFEs, and industry, to help them make informed decisions about their future study and career options.

Potting Day at Iramoo Grasslands

On Saturday, 17 May, a group of Year 12 VCE Vocational Major students contributed to a local environmental sustainability initiative by helping organise a Potting Day at Iramoo Grasslands in Cairnlea. Working alongside community members, the students braved the rain and freezing weather and re-potted over 1,000 native plants to be returned to the grasslands, aiming to improve biodiversity within our local community. A productive and rewarding way to spend the weekend!

Biggest Morning Tea

The Biggest Morning Tea, held on 23 May in collaboration with the VET Cookery class and Year 12 VCE VM students, was another standout event. It brought staff together for a worthy cause, raising $313.25 for the Cancer Council. A huge thank you goes to the ‘silent supporter’ who generously matched our total, bringing the overall funds raised to a total of $616.50.

100 Days of Success

A significant milestone was the Year 11 cohort celebrating 100 Days of Success in their VCE journey. Students were recognised for their hard work and dedication with a celebration that included a surprise performance, student awards, and light refreshments. Congratulations to all Year 11 students for reaching this important achievement.

Practice Exams

During the Term 2 holidays, Year 11 and Year 12 students completing a Unit 3/4 subject participated in practice exams conducted under conditions that closely mirrored the official VCAA examination environment. This experience provided valuable insights into exam timing, expectations, and stress management. Students received constructive feedback from their teachers to guide their revision and improve performance ahead of their final assessments. We were pleased with the attendance and determination shown by students during this preparation phase.

Youth Day

This term, we were excited to celebrate Youth Day, an extended lunchtime event organised by our Year 12 VCE Vocational Major students. The day featured a range of treats including fairy floss, an ice cream van, popcorn, slushies, donuts to name a few, as well as musical performances and a variety of games and activities, creating a fun and inclusive atmosphere for the school community.

A sincere thank you to the entire school community for contributing to the day’s success through positive behaviour and enthusiastic participation. Special thanks to Mr Jennings and all the staff volunteers who courageously took part in the dunk tank—you helped make the day truly memorable!

We wish our students a happy and successful Term 3. We encourage all our students and their families to speak to their coordinators if they have any questions or concerns.

Science Research Immersion Experience

This year, sixteen of our Year 10 students were accepted into the Science Research Immersion Experience. They spent four days at the Gene Technology Access Centre in the heart of Melbourne’s science research precinct learning about and conducting their own science research. Below are the reflections some students submitted about the experience:

‘This experience allowed me to broaden my understanding of DNA and how it works by providing me with the opportunity to simulate the processes scientists undergo in real-life labs. Not only that, but I was able to make friends from across the state that possessed a shared interest in STEM as me. Overall, I would definitely attend the program again if I were given the chance, as my only issue with it was that I wish it were longer!’ – Amelia 10F

“At GTAC I learnt about a wide variety of scientifical processes and even had the opportunity to contribute to an ongoing research project surrounding Ticks. I enjoyed using professional science equipment such as the electron microscope, centrifuge and pipettes. I learnt that within science Biology, Chemistry and Physics are often intertwined”. – Ezekiel 10F

“SIRE has been an eye-opening experience, where I’ve learned about cattle ticks and made social connections. This year’s main research project focused on finding ways to prevent ticks from affecting cattle. We started by doing some general research, including DNA fragmentation, DNA replication, and data analysis. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience. We got to meet students from all around Victoria and made many new connections. As well as we got to Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and see many STEM-based new cell machinery and learn about types of research that professional scientists and doctors’ team up together to help cure and figure out types of diseases”. – Chahat 10A

Year 8 Students Launch into ‘Mission to Mars’ at VSSEC

Throughout the past four weeks of the school year, our Year 8 students took part in the ‘Mission to Mars’ program at the Victoria Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) in Strathmore, as part of their science unit on the rock cycle.

Our students approached the challenge with enthusiasm, maturity, and leadership, supporting one another as they navigated their roles in a simulated Martian mission. A sincere thank you to all the staff who attended and supported students across the four weeks of excursions.

Below are some reflections from students on their experience:

‘Last week, our Year 8 class went on an exciting excursion called Mission to Mars. We took on the roles of astronauts and mission controllers, working in teams to solve challenges about space and Mars. One of the best parts was learning to identify different types of rocks. We found out that Mars has many kinds of rocks and studying them can help scientists learn more about the planet and even find signs of past life. This excursion helped us learn more about Mars, but it also brought our class closer together. We saw how important teamwork is, and how both astronauts and mission controllers play a big role in space missions. Mission to Mars was fun and educational. We learned a lot and had a great time working together.’ – Jelena Tran & Hannah Huynh (8F)

‘The Mission to Mars excursion was such an interesting experience. Students collaborated by taking on the roles of astronauts and mission controller, as we faced challenges like navigating life on Mars and solving problems along the way. The day was full of teamwork, problem solving, and excitement. This excursion didn’t just teach them about space; it gave us real excitement for science and showed us how to collaborate better. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the memorable day happen”. – Johnny Bui (8F)

‘I really enjoyed being in the mission control and having a headset to talk to the astronauts. I also thought that being in the spacesuit was a very unique and amazing experience. I liked how we were given independence and freedom because it was up to us to direct the mission. Overall, it was a pretty good program which I would recommend to other students to experience”. – Emily Cauchi (8G)

Year 9 Advance Students Cook Up a Storm on Trangias

During week 2 and 3, the Year 9 Advance class had their first go at cooking on a Trangia — and the results were as fun as they were flavourful!

As part of preparing for their Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey, students learned how to safely set up and cook using a portable camping stove. While some were a little nervous at first, the excitement quickly kicked in once the noodles hit the pan.

The classroom turned into a mini outdoor kitchen as groups worked together to get their Trangias going. From spicy Korean noodles to classic chicken flavour, it was interesting to see the wide range of noodle types students brought in. Everyone had their own twist — some added extra seasoning, others tossed in vegetables, and a few even combined flavours to make something entirely new.

There was plenty of laughter, some minor fuel spills (quickly cleaned up!), and a lot of proud faces as students tasted the food, they cooked themselves. For many, it was their first time using a Trangia, and the hands-on experience was both practical and memorable.

Cooking in class might not be the usual thing, but this activity definitely spiced up the week. It was a great introduction to outdoor skills and teamwork — and who knew cooking noodles could bring so much energy to a room?

Well done to all the students for giving it a go and making the most of it!

School for Student Leadership

During Term 2 Gloria Bui (9D), Georgia Cauchi (9B) and Andy Huynh-Tai (9A) attended the Alpine School for Student Leadership (SSL). During their time at Alpine School all students were involved in a range of activities and experiences vastly different from their usual school activities and experiences at SASC. They were all able to form new friendships with students attending from all parts of the state and actively partook in activities including skiing, hiking, cooking and outdoor camping.

Upon returning to SASC the students were asked about the highlight of their time at the school.

  • Gloria’s highlight – Hiking and camping outdoors overnight
  • Georgia’s highlight – Meeting new people and creating new friendships
  • Andy’s highlight – The outdoor activities, learning how to ski for the first time

Families of the students were also able to attend the camp during their time away over a visiting weekend. Students really appreciated the opportunity to see some familiar faces after being away from home for an extended period.

Upon returning to SASC the students are committed to working on their community project during Term 3 and Term 4 with a focus mental health. They look forward to delivering this project within the school community.

Debating Incursion: TikTok, Teamwork and Triumph

Read Time: ( words)

Last term, a lively debating incursion brought together two teams of quick thinkers for a spirited showdown on the topic: “TikTok should be banned.” With just one frantic hour to prepare their arguments, students threw themselves into the challenge with energy and enthusiasm.

Team One, made up of Xai, Phuoc and Bao, faced off against Team Two, featuring Yenvy, Lina and Mr Marinelli. The pressure was on as the debate adjudicator arrived at the office and the teams stepped up to deliver their points. Both sides presented strong, thoughtful arguments, showcasing teamwork, confidence and critical thinking.

In the end, the all-boys team (Xai, Phuoc and Bao) took home the chocolates, edging out their opponents with persuasive rebuttals and a clear structure. Following the debate, the adjudicator provided valuable individual feedback to each participant, helping them reflect and grow as speakers.

To top off a meaningful and memorable experience, students celebrated with well-earned slices of pizza — a delicious conclusion to an inspiring afternoon of public speaking and collaboration.

Speed Careering Inspires Year 10 Students

On Thursday 19 June, we hosted our annual Speed Careering event—a fast-paced and engaging experience designed to help Year 10 students explore a variety of career pathways as they prepare to make important subject and pathway decisions in Term 3. The event brought together a diverse group of professionals from fields including aviation, biomedical research, nursing, law, banking, policing, space science, physiotherapy, paramedicine, and more.

Across two sessions, students rotated through a series of 10-minute presentations, where they had the chance to hear firsthand about the day-to-day realities of different careers, the journeys speakers had taken to get there, and the skills and experiences that matter most in each field. The success of the day was evident not only in the calibre of guest speakers but also in the exceptional focus, maturity, and curiosity shown by our wonderful students. They asked insightful questions, listened attentively, and some even chose to stay back during recess and lunch to continue quizzing the presenters.

The energy in the Nindethana building was one of genuine engagement and aspiration. Students left the event with valuable insights to guide their next steps—and a few even left with a spring in their step, having kindled a new passion to pursue. A huge thank you goes to all the staff, presenters, and Year 10 Student Representative Council (SRC) leaders who helped make the event such a meaningful and successful one.

Staff vs Student Dodgeball

Read Time: ( words)

At the end of Term 2, the House team ran a student’s vs staff dodgeball match. 13 student teams gathered together, ready to battle it out for the winning title.

If you were anywhere near the COLA on Thursday, July 3, you definitely couldn’t miss the thunderous cheers from the crowd eagerly anticipating the final faceoff.

Overall, a surplus of students were eager to participate. Enthusiasm ruptured from the crowds, explosions of encouragement erupted like a volcano, exuding out positive vibes and motivation for the event.

Dodgeballs lasered through the atmosphere as students and teachers alike launched the balls with all their might.

Amidst the uproar of the students and the applause of the teachers, the crowd eagerly awaited the results of the showdown.

Thanks to the students and staff who played and cheered on with enthusiastic vibes. Special thanks for the following teams for taking part in this competition.

  • Monks
  • Top 10
  • D1 hogs
  • The Deadly 6
  • lebonbon
  • Nhan Nguyen 1000
  • Dadgers
  • Lil’ Boys
  • The Power Rangers
  • Team 10
  • Star fishes
  • sigma alpha pack 3000
  • sidekicks

Although the teachers claimed victory this time, who knows what the outcome will be next round?

It was a lively and popular event, however, for future reference it is important to not run on the field without signing up as this disrupts the competition. Nonetheless, the participation and enthusiasm this time around was extremely pleasing to see.

Keep an eye out for any updates for any future events like this, and don’t be afraid to join in on some fun! – Written by Amelia, Cynthia, Ezekiel and Jessica

Sincerely, the Year 10 House Captain Team.

Behind the Scenes

“In my opinion, the Student vs Teacher Dodgeball competition was the most interesting event that I have hosted and under the direction of Mr Dang and the House Team.

Coming from my perspective of administration, I was operating, collaborating and allocating some of the most interesting team names I’ve witnessed. For instance, ‘Nhan Nguyen 1000’, ‘Lil’Boys’, ‘The Power Rangers’, ‘Star fi shes’ and ‘sigma alpha pack 3000’ just to name a few. The planning for the student dodgeball was quite good but the execution was not what me and Mr Dang intended the activity to be.

It is a great activity for all students to participate in, more importantly it creates a headstart for potential future games that can be beneficial for ALL students to participate in”. – Richie Nguyen 12E, Admin Officer and Buttrose House Captain

“As Year 12s, being able to join these major school activities, such as this dodgeball match, was an excellent way of creating precious memories that last a lifetime. Watching the students get decimated by teachers and the whole atmosphere was absolutely hilarious which made it very memorable. Everyone was cheering on other students and being cheered for each other which was a great time.  We all came together as a school.

The atmosphere was lively and exciting and so was the spirit, but it was more of a collective student spirit than a house spirit. One of the most standout performances was during the last match, where it was a free-for-all, so you can see everyone trying their hardest to get the staff out.

I feel like that day was where I felt most connected to my friends, schoolmates and teachers (though it was also a great opportunity to get back at that one teacher for a bad SAC score …… I am just kidding).

One of my favourite memories was watching teachers wipe out student teams. Overall, it was a great experience, and I hope the school continues hosting these sorts of events”. – Rahima Muradi 12D – Rosewall House Captain
