The Year 7 program offers a combination of core and elective subjects.
The core subjects, which run for a full year, are:
The Language Enrichment Program (LEP) provides literacy support for students who need extra assistance. Those students identified as needing this support will participate in LEP instead of studying a LOTE.
St Albans Secondary College’s Accelerated Learning Program caters for the special educational needs of high ability students. It operates on the principles of Curriculum Acceleration and Enrichment. It offers high achieving students the opportunity to extend and enrich their learning and provides participants with challenging and engaging course material in all core subjects.
SASC offers places in the ALP to a limited number of high achieving and committed students. Prospective students are selected through our ALP testing session run by the educational assessment organisation Edutest, early in term 2 of their grade 6 year. Students are tested in verbal and numerical reasoning, reading comprehension, and mathematics. Suitable ALP applicants will demonstrate skills well above those of their age group, and will be highly recommended for the program by their primary school teacher.
As well as receiving a place in the ALP, high achieving applicants may also be awarded a Scholarship for Academic Excellence.
Our Literate Practices program enables students who excel in literacy to complete Analysis and Critical Literacy (ACL) at year 7. In year 8 and 9, they will continue to develop their reading and writing skills in Extension English. High achieving mathematics students will complete extension mathematics at years 7, 8 and 9.

Students are actively encouraged to develop creative thinking, research and problem solving skills which provide an excellent foundation for further studies. In year 9, students may also choose to study enrichment electives in English and Science.
In years 10 and 11 students are able to accelerate their learning further by completing a VCE subject. The accelerated pathway in Mathematics offers students the opportunity to complete all three VCE Mathematics subjects over two years.
The broader VCE experience can involve the study of a greater number and wider range of VCE units to enhance both their final ATAR score and tertiary entry requirements. Students may also undertake initial tertiary studies during their sixth year or engage in the many attractive career training programs that are available.
