Read Time: ( words)

Welcome to our last Newsletter for 2025.

We would like to thank you all for a great year, with some excellent results. We hope you all have a relaxing festive season with your families and look forward to seeing you in 2026.

Congratulations to our Year 12 VCE Students on their Outstanding Results Released this Week

We are incredibly proud of the achievements of the class of 2025. Our results include:

  • 10% of students achieved an ATAR over 90
  • 30% of students achieved an ATAR over 80
  • An average ATAR of 72.2
  • A Median Study Score of 30, equal to the state average

These outcomes represent a tremendous achievement. This group of students began high school in 2020 and spent much of their first two years learning online due to the COVID pandemic. Their resilience, commitment, and hard work have been evident throughout their journey, and we could not be prouder of what they have accomplished.

We also congratulate two students who achieved a perfect study score of 50 in General Maths:

  • Ethan Shaw (Year 12)
  • Mia Costa (Year 11)

Our Top 5 ATARs were achieved by the following students.

Staffing

We are farewelling a number of staff at the end of this year.

Ms Selvina Farrugia and Ms Julie Panayiotou are moving to other schools.

Ms Amy Lee and Ms Avril Good are taking up Leadership positions in new schools.

We wish them well in their new settings and thank them for their service to our students.

We are also seeing the retirement of 3 long serving staff members – Ms Jill Donaldson, Ms Cinzia Cunningham and Ms Andrea Coleridge.

We would like to congratulate them on their careers and thank them for their years of service to public education in general, and to our school in particular.

We wish them all the best in their retirement.

Parent Opinion Survey

Thank you to all those parents who participated in the Parent Opinion Survey this year. The results have just been released, and they are quite positive.

We are above the State and Similar Schools in every factor measured. Teams will look closely at the results and use them to inform how we can continue to improve our practices.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Brandon Cvetanoski of Year 10. He competed at the All-School Australian Track and Field Championships on Dec 5 in Melbourne. He won the gold medal and is the Australian National Champion for U17 triple jump, with a winning jump of 14.57m. Well done, Brandon!

Year 12 Valedictory Dinner

Our Year 12 students celebrated the end of their secondary schooling last week at the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner, a fun and memorable evening filled with good food, music, and plenty of dancing. The event provided students with a chance to come together one last time as a cohort, reflecting on their shared journey while enjoying a relaxed social night with friends and teachers. One of the highlights of the evening was the Valedictorian address delivered by Ricardo Vom, who spoke with warmth about his school experience, challenges, and achievements that shaped the Class of 2025. The night was full of energy and celebration, with students embracing the opportunity to mark the end of an important chapter in style.  Congratulations to all our Year 12 graduates. We wish them every success as they step into their next adventure.

Year 10 Formal

Our Year 10 students finished the year on a strong note on Friday, 6 December. Their conduct during exams was excellent, and their engagement throughout the orientation program was commendable.

The formal was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the year, and it was great to see the majority of the cohort attending and enjoying the evening. The committee did an outstanding job in creating an inclusive event that ensured everyone had a memorable and enjoyable night.

It was fabulous to see the students dressed up and to reflect on how much they have grown in maturity over their two years in the sub-school.

Semester Reports

Semester 2 reports will be published on Friday 12 December. We ask that parents review the reports with their student and commend areas of growth and facilitate conversations around areas for development.

Alumni Success

On an exciting note, we have learned that one of our alumni, Martin Grannas (Class of 1984), is in Stockholm this week celebrating the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Since leaving St Albans High School, as it was known in 1984, Martin has completed his PhD at the University of Melbourne along with several post-doctoral studies.

Martin, together with other renowned scientists, has contributed important ‘stepping stones’ to the work recognised in this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Professor Richard Robson, an Australian chemist at the University of Melbourne, received this prestigious honour alongside Susumu Kitagawa and Omar M. Yaghi for their pioneering research on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)—porous materials with transformative applications in carbon capture, water harvesting, and catalysis. Their work has revolutionised molecular architecture.

Professor Robson, who developed the first MOF in 1989 and opened the door to major environmental and technological advances, is also well known to some of our Science staff here at St Albans Secondary College, having taught them in the undergraduate years.

Grade 6 Welcome Evening for Parents and Students

It was wonderful to welcome a large turnout for our annual Grade 6 Welcome evening on Tuesday 25 November. An overview of the range of activities and opportunities as well as the breadth of curriculum were provided during the evening.  There was a social meet and greet over light refreshments provided by the Junior Sub School team who we thank for their support of the evening. Thanks also to Ron Brown and Lauren Honeycombe for their organisation of the event and the members of the leadership team who provided more detailed information in the small group sessions.

The transition to secondary school is an important milestone for Grade 6 students and we are pleased to welcome our new cohort.  These evenings are always well received and provide a great opportunity for the school to build strong connections with families, so we thank all those who attended for their participation. If you have a child coming to the School in Year 7 next year, and were unable to attend, please contact the school if you require any information.

Grade 6 Orientation Day

We had a great transition day for all our incoming 2026 Year 7 students on Tuesday 9 December, students were provided tasters of many of their subjects and were able to familiarise themselves with the school environment. There was a lot of enthusiasm and excitement about making this transition from primary to secondary school and we look forward to working with all our new students and their families over the next 6 years of their education.

Junior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

The upcoming ban on under 16-year-olds accessing many social media platforms has been looming large in the Junior Sub School for some time now.  For many of our students this legislation will require a significant change in their online behaviour.  Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, TikTok and others will restrict accounts to those aged 16 and older.  The school believes that delaying access to social media until young people turn 16 will give them time to develop real world social skills and the digital literacy to navigate the online environment confidently.  The responsibility for implementing the age limits lie with the social media platforms.  Families can access more information from the eSafety Commissioner at www.esafety.gov.au

To further support our students in the online world we have once again access the Digital Thumbprint program.  This incursion event has a presenter address each of the junior school classes for a period, informing them about bullying, scams and safe online behaviour.  We are indebted to Dom Phelan, our fantastic presenter for his work with Digital Thumbprint.

Our year 7 & 8 students will participate in a Water Education Day on Wednesday, 17 December.  This day includes 4 periods at the Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre followed by a double period session on beach safety here in Australia.  We consider that this is very timely given that summer is just around the corner and many of our students are likely to be swimming and playing in the water.  All families need to provide consent via Compass.

We ask that all students and families focus on finishing the year strongly.  At this time of year, we can occasionally see some challenging behaviour.  The school year for Junior School runs all the way to 18 December and we will maintain our usual high standards until the final bell.

Finally on behalf of the Junior School team I would like to wish all our students and their families an enjoyable break and thank them for the support during 2025.  We look forward to seeing you all in 2026.

Later in Term 4 the Junior Sub School students will receive additional information regarding safe online behaviour and the new regulatory regime for social media.  Recently we have seen some concerning behaviour in this space, so additional guidance would be welcome.  We ask that parents also familiarise themselves with the changes that are coming to social media regulations and work with their young people to get the best outcomes.

Middle School Report

Read Time: ( words)

The second half of the semester has seen all middle school students busily preparing for End of Semester Tests and exams. The year 9 and 10 cohorts completed these assessments throughout weeks 7 and 8. These assessments provide the opportunity for all students to show their learning and growth throughout the semester. Semester reports will then be available through Compass on December 12 to all families.

Year 10 students will participate in an orientation program, with those undertaking a Vocational Major pathway in 2025 having attended their VET orientation. Students are encouraged to participate in all orientation activities and attend all days to be best prepared for the start of year 11.

Students in the Middle School have had opportunities to expand their learning through various activities. Year 9 students visited the Marine Discovery Centre as part of their work in Science to further their understanding of marine ecosystems. The hands-on experience and data gained on the excursion will then be applied in the classroom to prepare a practical report.

The Year 10 Formal was an outstanding success, bringing together students and staff for a memorable evening of celebration, style, and community spirit. Held on the evening of December 5, the event showcased the maturity, confidence, and enthusiasm of the Year 10 cohort as they marked an important milestone in their high-school journey.  The Middle School team would like to thank all the staff and students who have been working throughout the year organising and planning the event.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our whole school community of staff, students and parents for their support throughout the year. Thank you also to the Middle School Team, Mr. McIntyre, Ms. Le, Mr. Wenham, Mr. Winduss, Ms. Smith, Mr. Yamin, Ms. Vo, Ms. Pearce and Ms. Tran and Ms. Napoli for their work, care and dedication to student growth and wellbeing.

We wish everyone a restful break over the holidays and look forward to seeing you in 2026 rested and ready to take on a new year.

ABCN STEM Innovators Program

Our Year 7 and 8 girls recently attended the STEM Innovators program organized by the Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN). They engaged in a design-thinking workshop at Fujitsu where they also had the opportunity to learn about their mentors’ career pathways in STEM. This was followed by two follow-up sessions at Scienceworks, where they applied their newly-learnt coding skills on Micro:bits to design, build and present a prototype solution to a challenge question. Here is what our students had to say about their experiences, as shared with the organizers.

‘it’s never the presenting or the solution that stumps you, it’ll be the several creative mind around you, suggesting incredibly unique ideas that’ll get you thinking and hooked.’

It was extremely fun for me experimenting with all the different situations and coding.’

‘It was worthwhile because it helped improve my critical thinking, skills, and creativity. Plus, I made some new friends and enjoyed the light works show.’

it helped me a lot, make new friends and exit my comfort zone.’

‘I was able to expand on my creative thinking.’

‘most useful thing i learnt from my mentors is to be comfortable and say out your ideas which is really helpful for me in the future.’

‘it was fun and i learnt a lot’

‘Because it was engaging and exciting.’

Debating Program Delivers a Thrilling Finish – After-School Event

On 27 November students gathered after school for a high-quality and fiercely contested debate on the timely topic: “Should the legal age of criminal responsibility be raised?”

The two teams delivered sharp arguments, thoughtful rebuttals, and impressive teamwork throughout the evening. On the Affirmative side were Xai, Kevin, Bao, and Phuoc, who argued passionately for change. Challenging them on the Negative side were Erica, Lina, Eleanore, and Karina, who presented a strong case for maintaining the current age.

The debate remained neck-and-neck from the opening speaker to the final rebuttal. It was Erica, closing for the Negative team, whose calm delivery and well-structured points ultimately secured the win for her team—by just one point in an incredibly close result.

Adjudicator Mr Marinelli praised all eight students for their clarity, confidence, and critical thinking in what they described as a very well-argued debate.

To top off the evening, the group celebrated with well-earned pizza, which was quickly demolished amid plenty of laughs and good vibes.

A fantastic effort from all involved and a great showcase of the talent in our debating program.

Advance – Last Camp of the Year

From Wednesday 12 November to Friday 14 November, the Year 9 Advance students wrapped up their final camp of the year with an unforgettable three-day adventure along the stunning Great Ocean Road. We stayed at Cumberland River Holiday Park, where everyone pitched their own tents and quickly discovered what real camping feels like. The weather was wild at times, with cold winds and restless nights, but the campfire brought warmth, comfort and a strong sense of togetherness. Students showed incredible resilience, adapting to the conditions and supporting each other throughout the camp.

Surfing in Lorne with GoRideAWave was once again a major highlight. This was the group’s second surf program for the year, and their confidence really shone through. Students hit the water ready to go, building on the skills they had learned earlier in the year. There were plenty of wipeouts and laughter, but also some impressive pop-ups and long rides all the way to shore. The instructors were genuinely impressed with how far everyone had come.

Another big part of the trip was our visit to Live Wire Park. The high ropes course challenged students in all the best ways, putting their balance, focus and bravery to the test. Whether climbing, zip lining or crossing shaky bridges, everyone showed tremendous courage. Classmates encouraged each other through every moment, creating a supportive and exciting atmosphere high above the ground.

Back at camp, students took responsibility for cooking meals, organising equipment and looking after one another. Even the quieter moments—playing games by the river, relaxing together or warming up around the fire—became memorable parts of the experience.

Our final Advance Camp in Lorne was the perfect way to finish the year. It was challenging, exciting and filled with moments that the students will remember long after Year 9. The teamwork, resilience and growth they showed truly captured the spirit of the Advance program.

Interact Club

Read Time: ( words)

In 2025, I have had the honour to be the president of the Interact Club, a student-led initiative designed to develop leadership skills and take action in our community through fundraising and volunteering! This year, we have participated in two projects: one international and local project respectively. For our international project, we have collaborated with Keilor East Rotary to donate financially to buy books for Cambodian Libraries. In terms of our local project, we have partnered with Saint Vinnies in order to volunteer with pricing and organising items for sale to those who are facing financial hardships.

To raise funds for our international project, we have consistently engaged in various school events. On 14 February, we started our first event of the year by selling Dessert Cups, creating a profit of $154. Then, for Harmony Day on May 2, we sold Noum Kong (Cambodian Donuts), creating a total of $152. For Youth Day on the 6 August, we made hot chips for the students, making over $300. Afterwards, we participated in R U OKAY DAY with lolly bags, creating a profit of $48. Finally, to conclude our fundraising events, we created two Movie Lunchtimes, making an overall profit of $203. These events could not have been possible without the contribution of all of the Interact Club members creating posters, manning the stalls and helping with the decision making of the items sold.

As for our local project at Saint Vinnies on 18 October, the volunteering students learnt how to price and organise the items given to them, eventually collaborating with one another and becoming friends. Their contributions to this event and the received positive feedback highlights its success in bringing students together for a like-minded cause, making a difference in our community.

Furthermore, in order to uplift student agency and engagement, we had sessions of practical activities such as creating Origami to put up during R U OKAY day, creating badges to promote Interact Club, colouring paper templates for the Movie Lunchtime and other numerous tasks. This has allowed students to develop their communication skills with other members but also their drive to uphold responsibility as an Interact Club member.

Being President of the Interact Club required me to learn how to think creatively for each event, organise the club meetings and events, and develop my leadership skills in decision making and adaptability. My time as President inevitably had its highs and lows, but regardless of this, every event for Interact Club has been nothing short of extraordinary with the assistance and appreciation of our club members and my executive team.

Thus, I would like to thank my Executive Team: Kaitlyn Au, Apirana Nicol, Julien Kanwar, and Taneesha Jeyanthan for their utmost dedication to the endeavours of the Interact Club. I hope the new executive team, led by the 2026 Interact Club President, Kaitlyn Au, with her new executive board: John Nguyen, Gabriella Orellana, Chahat Sidhu, Mai Nguyen and Ruby Pham will succeed in their efforts fulfilling the goals and aspirations of the Interact Club. I wish them the best of luck!

This year has been absolutely amazing – I wouldn’t change a thing!

Note from Outgoing Year 12 House Captain

Congratulations on being appointed to your role as you progress into empowering your house teams and hopefully will win your next school championship via the Crocker Cup.

Despite numerous meetings that you will eventually attend, you have an opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities such as house events, athletics and swimming carnivals.

Not only that, but your appointment highlights also your dedication and a potential role model for the whole school in which results will be beneficial in career opportunities in the future.

On a final note, give 2026 your best shot and eventually give Mr Dang and your mates the best experience that you will ever get to witness.

St Albans Connect – Alumni Program

Hey folks,

Lucy, a 2016 graduate, contributed to our first ever Y10 pathways panel back in 2022 and in 2023 she worked closely with our Y9 SEAL students as part of her science research review.

What an incredible achievement and well-deserved recognition.

On another note, two other alumni, Robiel Abraham who attended SASC in 2012 and Jason Nguyen ’21, have both recently received invitations to study a Doctor of Medicine – SASC grads are kicking goals!!

The alumni bush telegraph (LinkedIn) has been buzzing in recent times, with this big news from Janki Kharel ’18 amongst the noise.

Janaki presented as part of our ‘Careers in Construction’ session for the Y10s on-site work experience program back in 2022.

Crossing all our fingers and toes for her 😊

As the Year 12 students prepared to spread their wings and fly beyond the school gates, St Albans Connect continued the tradition of the Green Gift Initiative which marked their graduation and thanked them for their commitment to our community.

More than just a lovely piece of greenery, the plants are a living symbol of our hope that the students will remain rooted in the St Albans community, even as they venture out into the world.

These gifts are also a sincere token of appreciation for their valuable participation in the alumni sessions throughout their time at school. Their input and presence have enriched the program, and we’re so grateful for their engagement.

As they move on to the next chapter, we encourage them to join the St Albans Connect network by offering them an opportunity to share their experiences and inspire the next generation of students. We have already had many registrations, and we look forward to seeing the incredible things they’ll achieve and witnessing all the ways they’ll continue to grow.

If there are Year 12 graduates out there reading this (unlikely given schoolies) it is not too late to join St Albans Connect. Simply fill out this form (it takes less than 2 minutes) and I’ll be in touch next year!

Have a wonderful break everyone! Looking forward to a bigger and brighter 2026!!
