End of Term

As we wrap up a very busy term, I want to thank all of our students and staff for their hard work, dedication, and care for our school community. Your commitment to learning and supporting one another makes a real difference every day. It has been a very busy term with lots of events, excursions and our fantastic MAC production. It was also especially exciting to see our school recognised on the front page of the Melbourne Age for our excellent VCE results over a number of years.  Click the link to see the Melbourne Age Article.

A special best wishes to the Class of 2025 as you enter the final stretch of your VCE and VCE/VM preparations. Your focus and perseverance will see you in good stead. We are all cheering you on as you approach these important milestones.

A number of staff, Mr Craig Moore, Mr Matthew Olthof and Ms Athina Kratsis will be on extended leave for the start of Term 4 and we extend our best wishes to theme for an enjoyable time. We look forward to seeing them on their return later in the term.

Enjoy a well-deserved break and come back refreshed for the term ahead.

Congratulations to Staff

Congratulations to some members of our staff community for their achievements beyond the College. Firstly, to Mr Cameron Beale who won the Australian National title for Masters 5 in Brazilian Ju-jitsu at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday 16 August 2025.

Also, a big congratulations to Amra Pajalic, who had an article published in the AEU News. Amra is a published author, and you can read her recent article here.

Year 12s

As we reach the end of Term 3, our Year 12 cohort have plenty to celebrate. There is not long to go in their journey through our college and it is a timely reminder that now is not the time to relax. That will come after exams and portfolios next term. In the holidays VCE students will undertake their final set of practice exams. We encourage all students to take these seriously and to get the most out of it.

The Year 12 Graduation will take place on October 17, please refer to compass for details and we hope for a great turnout.

Wear it Purple Day

Friday 29 August, was Wear it Purple Day. Wear it Purple Day was founded in 2010 in response to global stories of real teenagers, real heartache and their very real responses. In 2010, several rainbow young people took their own lives following bullying and harassment resulting from the lack of acceptance of their sexuality or gender identity. This day is about showing LGBTIQA+ young people that they have the right to be proud of who they are.

R U OK Day

R U OK? Day was celebrated at the College on Friday 12 September. R U OK? Day is a National Day of Action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life.

You don’t need to be an expert to reach out – just a good friend and a great listener. Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life:

  1. Ask R U OK?
  2. Listen
  3. Encourage action
  4. Check in

On the day prior, at SASC we shared a mini-lesson with students on how to support their peers. Our VCE-VM students and Wellbeing Team also organised a lunchtime event with live music, a sausage sizzle, external visitors from local organisations and activities. The day was a huge success and congratulations to everyone that helped make the event possible.

Year 9 City Experience

This year’s city experience has proven to be a resounding success, thanks to the exemplary behaviour of our students, their reliability and the overwhelmingly positive feedback we’ve received from venues and the public. Our school council president Tracy Nero was in the city one day and reported that she saw a group of our students at a tram stop. She commended them for their respectful behaviour.

The success of the City Experience would not have been possible without the expert organisation of Katie O’Connell our Humanities leader. She made sure that every aspect of the program was planned to perfection.  Katie was supported by Katelyn Smith and the rest of the Humanities team.  We thank them both for their dedication and commitment to the city experience program. Thank you also to the Middle Sub School team, the Inclusion team, and all staff who attended city experience.

MAC – Spamalot

This year St Albans Secondary College Music Appreciation Club presented Monty Python’s Spamalot. It was a huge success and received rave reviews. For the first time, the students performed at the Bowery Theatre which was a wonderful experience for our students and staff. This is an important event on our calendar each year and it’s wonderful to see the talents of our students and staff. Months of planning and rehearsals go into creating such a performance and we thank our Director Melissa Tamraz and Musical Director for their commitment and dedication. Thank you also to the production team and all other staff who assisted with the production.

New Uniform Policy

Thank you to everyone who contributed feedback on our uniform policy through surveys and focus groups. Your input has been greatly valued, and the Uniform Working Group, in partnership with our School Council, has now finalised the updated policy was sent out to all members of our community via Compass and has also been posted to the School Webpage.

Overall, there will be no major changes to the policy. The most significant adjustment, as required by the Department of Education, is that all pants and shorts will now be non-branded. This change provides families with greater flexibility in where these items can be purchased, provided they are consistent in style and fabric with those available at the school uniform shop. Students are welcome to continue wearing their existing branded pants and shorts, and the uniform shop will gradually update stock as current supplies sell out.

If you have any questions about the uniform, or if your family requires support in purchasing items, please do not hesitate to contact your Coordinator.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews were held on Wednesday 17 September.  We thank all those parents and guardians who took the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s progress. These conversations are always useful for all involved and assist us to provide the best outcomes for students as well as providing a forum for parents to meet their child’s teachers and share information that may assist teachers working with their child.

Please contact your child’s Year Level Coordinator if you were unable to attend and would like some feedback on your child’s progress.

New Staff at St Albans Secondary College

Milo Maccora

My name is Milo (they/them), I have just joined the Inclusion Team at St Albans Secondary College as Education Support, and I’m so excited to be here! I’m studying Secondary Education and Maths at Monash University, and recently did my placement at SASC which I loved so much I applied to come back! It is a huge honour to join such a lovely community.

In my free time I like to knit, crochet, and take naps with my two cats. I also love taking different classes and learning new things, I’ve just finished a pottery course which was so fun!

Looking forward to getting to know everyone! 😊

Junior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

The JSS recently conducted the Year 8 into Year 9 Information Evening.  It was very pleasing to see the Performing Arts Centre almost full with students, parents, carers and guardians, eager to understand the process of selecting subjects for Year 9.  The second purpose for the evening was to present some information regarding online behaviour of youth around the world.  The amount of screen time as well as the impacts on mental health, sleep and general wellbeing is of concern to educators and the broader community.  Whilst there are clear benefits to living in a hyper-connected world, it is important that the broader implications are also understand as some of this is quite obviously negative.  A summary of the upcoming introduction of age restrictions for social media was also discussed.  All of our Junior School students will have their accounts blocked on significant platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Discord.  Whilst we will remain concerned with supporting our students where problems arise with their social media use, it will be in the context that the use of such sites is actually against the law.

The Junior School students recently enjoyed a performance of ‘The Flipside’ from Brainstorm Productions.  This incursion dealt with some of the issues raised in the Year 8 Parent Information Evening, and in particular the way in which student produced content, made for entertainment and then posted to social media, can in fact have a life of its own.  This content can end up in places where the content creator has no control.  This can have severe unforeseen impacts, and the loose threads of such content are almost impossible to track down.  The production was a cautionary tale and also modelled the sort of behaviour we would expect from our students in the event of such social media content.  Our message to students is that what you put online is there forever, and if you don’t want your grandmother to read it, don’t post it.

Finally, we wish all our students and families the very best for the September holidays.  The weather is finally warming up and is inviting us all to get outside a bit more and enjoy the sunshine.

Mr Craig Moore – Junior Sub School Leader

Middle School Report

Read Time: ( words)

Term 3 has been a very busy and productive time for Middle School students. Both Year 9 and 10 students engaged in course counselling earlier this term, where students were given the opportunity to consider their pathway into 2026. Students were supported by Middle School staff as they chose from a wide range of subjects from all key learning areas. All students took part in a pre-course selection activity, which helped them make decisions about their subjects and career pathways. Students were able to select subjects that not only interest them but also subjects that will challenge them. The Middle School would like to thank the support and organisation that the Careers team provided throughout. We hope that all students are excited for their subjects in 2026!

Year 9 and 10 students celebrated their successes in semester 1 at our year level assemblies this term. Students were nominated by their teachers for academic and progress awards, with some receiving multiple awards. On behalf of the Middle School teachers and coordinators, we want to congratulate all students who received an award and encourage all others to work hard this semester to be considered for one.

Week 7 saw year 9 students participate in the City Experience Program, a week dedicated to developing skills outside of the classroom. Students explored the city, including IMAX, the Melbourne Museum and Docklands, to not only learn more about Melbourne, but also gain confidence in navigating the city. We would like to thank Ms. Katie O’Connell and Ms. Katelyn Smith for their time and effort that has gone into organising the program.

As we come to the end of term 3, all Middle School Coordinators are proud of the progress students have made and look forward to discussing their progress reports. We encourage you to make a booking to see your child’s teachers at Parent-Teacher interview day on September 17. It is a time to celebrate successes and look to set goals for the remainder of semester 2 and beyond.

Mr Andrei Alexandrescu – Acting Middle Sub School Leader |Commerce Teacher

Senior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

This time of year is usually filled with lots of study, hard work and anticipation as our Year 12 students are preparing to conclude their final year of study. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, dedication, and resilience, and we wish them all the best as they prepare for their practice and end-of-year exams/portfolio interviews. As they navigate this important time, we encourage our students to lean on their support networks—friends, family, teachers, Year Level Coordinators and the Wellbeing Team, who are all here to help them succeed. We look forward to celebrating their milestones and the bright futures that lie ahead.

ABCN Program

It was another successful year for the ABCN leadership program organised by Mr Olthof, which focused on goal setting, networking, and mentorship. Twenty emerging Year 11 female student leaders participated in the program and had the opportunity to engage with industry mentors, develop their confidence, and strengthen their leadership skills. The program provided valuable insights into their career pathways and personal growth and equipped the students with strategies to achieve their goals both at school and beyond. We would like to thank ABCN once again for providing our students with opportunity to participate in the program.

Year 12 Motivational Lunch

On Wednesday 20 August, Year 12 students participated in a Motivational Lunch, which featured keynote speaker and former student Stephanie Stavropoulos. Stephanie shared her journey from St Albans Secondary College to her successful career in Human Resources. Her presentation was both engaging and inspiring, leaving students encouraged to embrace challenges and were reminded to “to use fear as a driving force to propel you forward rather than as an obstacle to hold you back”. We sincerely thank Stephanie for volunteering her time to speak to the students. The students were treated to a pizza lunch by the sub school. We feel that the event achieved its purpose by reminding the students that anything can be achieved through goal setting, hard work and perseverance.

VCE VM

The VCE VM students have had a busy and productive term. They actively supported Are You OK? Day, Wear It Purple Day and a local non-for-profit animal shelter by hosting a barbecue, baking cupcakes, and creating message boards to raise money, and promote awareness and inclusion.

Students also participated in Real Talk roundtable discussions, where volunteers from a variety of non-for-profit organisations and businesses shared insights into career pathways and provided an opportunity for students to ask questions in an open and supportive setting.

The Year 11 VCE VM students enhanced their learning through a real-world experience at the Yakult factory, where they gained valuable insights into large-scale business operations, workplace procedures, and occupational health and safety practices. The excursion concluded with a team-building session at O’Brien Icehouse, which encouraged collaboration and strengthened peer connections.

Last Day of Classes

The last day of classes for Year 12 students is Friday 17 October. Classes will run as per normal from periods 1 – 3. The period 3 teacher will take the class to the front of the school for “uniform signing” at 11.30am. Students will be dismissed from the front gardens at 11:50am. Students are expected to go straight home to prepare for the Awards Evening. Lockers must be cleaned out by this date. Any items remaining in lockers after this date will be thrown out or donated. Last day of Year 11 classes will be Friday 31 October 2025.

All students are reminded to take anything they need for the holidays from their lockers.

Year 12 Awards Evening

The highly anticipated Year 12 Awards Evening will be held at The Atrium, Flemington Racecourse, 448 Epsom Road, Flemington VIC 3031. Students are able to invite two guests free of charge. A further release of one ticket per student for $20.00 will be available early next term.

Students are required to be at the venue by no later than 3:30pm for gown fitting and rehearsal. Doors will open for guests at 6:40pm for seating. The Ceremony will start at 7:00pm SHARP. Guests who arrive after 7:00pm may need to wait in the foyer until instructed by the ushers for seating during a suitable time. A professional photographer will take photos during the ceremony. Guests are welcome to take their own photos after the ceremony. The event will be filmed by Encore Entertainment. This is a milestone event for our graduating students, and we look forward to celebrating with their families during this special time.

Whole School Assembly & Celebration Day

The whole school assembly will run during periods 3 and 4 on Monday 20 October. Students can dress up in school-appropriate fancy dress attire, if they like. Students are not to wear items that obscure the face, are offensive or carry fake weapons.

The Year 12 students will assemble in the gymnasium from 9:45am to 10:15am. A photobooth will be available for use. During the ceremony, students are to remain seated, listen respectfully and adhere to the usual protocols. Students will be provided with a lunch. The celebration will conclude at 2:00pm.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

Read Time: ( words)

At St Albans Secondary College, we use School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) to teach and acknowledge positive student behaviours. SWPBS is an internationally recognised framework with an extensive evidence base that is shown to improve behavioural, wellbeing, and academic outcomes for children and young people. SWPBS focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours while providing targeted assistance to students who may need extra support, leading to a more successful and inclusive learning community.

The approach also improves teacher wellbeing by providing them with the tools to establish positive learning climates, where they can focus on teaching and learning, thereby increasing engagement and instructional time.

SWPBS is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.

An essential aspect of SWPBS is to provide clear behaviour expectations and rules for our whole school community so everyone can work together to the same standard. St Albans Secondary College has developed its positive behaviour program in consultation with students, staff and families.

Our behaviour expectations apply to all staff and students – in the classroom, in the yard and in the wider community. They are:

  • Be safe
  • Be respectful
  • Be responsible

To support a consistent approach to what that means in different settings, the College has developed a behaviour matrix, which is available below.

To provide family feedback regarding SWPBS at St Albans Secondary College, please click on the QR code below to access a survey.  We welcome your participation.

If you have any questions about how we incorporate SWPBS in our school community or would like to learn more, please contact the school.

Students Reflection

I’ve been a part of MAC since I first came to school in year 7. Now I’m in year 10 having done MAC for the 4th year in a row and I’m so happy to have been able to participate in this year’s production of Monty Python’s Spamalot!

In Spamalot, we got to explore the fantastical world of medieval England with the masterful comedic touch of Monty Python. I had the honour of playing a couple different roles, though I most thoroughly connected with the mother of an over-confident and under-intelligent son (he’s like that in real life too but we love him anyway).

MAC for me is also a home away from home. Over the course of the two months, we spend with each other, we become a family of sorts, sticking together through the ups and the downs. We stay late at school or the theatre, labour over every scene until it meets Ms Tamraz’s high standards, and work through every problem that arises with costume changes or backstage.

The work beforehand is of course, all worth it in the end. Being able to perform in front of such fantastic audiences and alongside such incredible people is why I keep coming back to MAC, and being able to perform in a professional theatre for the first year has been a highlight.

Sadly, this year will have been my last as I need to focus on my VCE studies over the next two years, so I made sure to give it my absolute all. I know everyone around me keeps begging me to join next year but I’m sorrrrry I need to focus on school. – Apirana Nicol (Yr 10)

Here are some photos of this year’s production, Spamalot.

St Albans Secondary Students Shine at Interact Multi-District Conference

On Sunday 11 August, seven students from St Albans Secondary College proudly represented the school at the Southern Region Multi-District Interact Conference, held at Balwyn High School. The event brought together Interactors from across Melbourne for a day of collaboration, leadership development, and inspiration.

Our students had the opportunity to share their recent fundraising efforts, highlighting the hard work and creativity that goes into supporting important causes through the St Albans Interact Club. Club president, Stephanie Truong, also played a key role on the day, delivering the project report presentation on behalf of SASC. Her confident presentation showcased the club’s recent achievements- including raising over $300 for a new street library in Cambodia- and set an excellent example of student leadership in action.

The group also enjoyed hearing from other Interact clubs about the wide variety of projects and initiatives happening across the region, exchanging ideas and building connections for future collaborations. One of the highlights of the day was a keynote presentation from a guest speaker representing the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The speaker’s powerful insights into global humanitarian challenges left a lasting impression on students, reminding them of the impact that young people can make when they engage with their communities and think globally.

The conference not only strengthened our students’ leadership skills but also reinforced the value of teamwork, service, and compassion. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing how they will bring their new knowledge and inspiration back to our school community.

Business and Community Partnerships Breakfast 2025

On Wednesday 13 August, St Albans Secondary College hosted its annual Business & Community Partnerships Breakfast, bringing together local leaders, educators, alumni, and valued supporters. Guests were welcomed by our Year 11 SRC students and enjoyed a chance to connect over coffee before formalities began. MCs Annastasia and Mitchell opened the event with an Acknowledgement of Country and extended a special welcome to representatives from the Brimbank City Council, the Department of Education, local primary schools and our many business and community partners whose support enriches the opportunities available to our students.

Guests enjoyed a hearty breakfast and fresh coffee served by a professional group of Vocational Major (VM) students, and a program of inspiring speeches. Year 12 students Vanessa Ngo and Arda Sipaloglu shared personal stories of their educational journeys, highlighting their resilience, ambition, and the importance of their wide support networks in helping them grow as individuals. College Principal, Craig Jennings then introduced guest speaker Deirdre Hardy, CEO of Future Connect, who spoke about bridging the gap between employers and young people in Melbourne’s west. Deirdre shared some exciting initiatives such as their YouthGrounds and Future Recruit programs and encouraged the guests to partner with Future Connect to provide future work placements, industry tours, and mentoring opportunities for young people in the local area.

The morning concluded with door prizes, acknowledgements, and heartfelt thanks to the many staff and students who contributed to the event’s success—especially our VM and VET Hospitality teams, who adapted quickly when teacher Ms Daniela Karner was injured just days before the breakfast (Wishing her a speedy recovery!). The event was a celebration of community, collaboration, and our shared commitment to expanding opportunities for our students.

VCE Maths Games Day

On Friday the 1 August, we attended the VCE MAV Maths Games at RMIT Storey Hall. At the games, we were split into two teams, set to complete a range of puzzles and games whilst competing against other schools. First, we were given 4 different puzzles to complete, there were sets of rules we had to follow to make sure the numbers added up, similar to a sudoku but way more challenging. Then we moved on to the Swiss challenge, where we versed different schools to figure out number patterns given that we were provided with a hint and the first view values of the rule. Try and guess what rule applies to this one! The hint is “holey moley”. If x= 2, y= 0; x= 10, y= 1; x = 88, y = 4; x= 104, y=?

The last round we played was a relay that consisted of multiple worded problems where we would have to run up to a designated teacher to receive a single question, run back to our table to solve the problem and finally run back to the teacher to both check our answer and receive a new question. This repeated until the time limit ran out. Not only did it test our problem-solving skills but also our running skills (thanks Angie for being our runner).

Overall, it was a great experience and an amazing opportunity to have fun, do some math puzzles and meet new people. And if you were wondering what the answer to the question above was, the answer is 2, where the y value depended on how many ‘holes’ were in the x value, for example when x = 6, y=1 since there is one hole in the number 6.

Thank you, Ms Cai and Ms Johnston, for supervising us! – Written by Yr 11 students: Mitchell Cauchi, Julien Kanwar, Ronnie Tang and Vincent Tran

SASC Students Compete at Yr 8 MAV Maths Games Day

On Wednesday 20 August, eight of our Yr8 students, Elisha Chua, Jayson Huynh, Sophia Ly, Jonathon Mai, Anson Nguyen, Ben Pham, Mai Pham and Harkeerat Singh, from St Albans Secondary College, represented our school with pride and enthusiasm at the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) Maths Games Day, hosted at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. The students formed two teams and were accompanied by Ms Gloria Yi and Mr Cameron Beale.

Throughout the day, students immersed themselves in a series of fast-paced and challenging activities that tested their mathematical knowledge, teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity. The event brought together 57 teams from high-performing independent and government schools across Victoria, creating a vibrant and competitive atmosphere.

Despite the tough competition, our students performed exceptionally well and finished in 21st and 37th place. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to their perseverance, problem-solving abilities, and collaborative spirit.

Beyond the scores, our students consistently demonstrated the core SASC values of Leadership, Respect, Integrity, Excellence, and Critical Thinking & Creativity. They approached each challenge with positivity, encouraged one another, and represented the school with integrity.

Congratulations to all students involved!

Ticking off a New Species – SASC Students Decode DNA to Discover Distinct Arachnids

Twenty-five Yr 10 Science students, nominated by their Biology teachers had the opportunity to participate in this Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series program conducted by GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre) in collaboration with the Melbourne Veterinary School (University of Melbourne).

Part A: Before attending, students completed two online courses:

  1. Exploring the structure of DNA
  2. Polymerase Chain reactions.

Part B: In small groups, students participated in a workshop led by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) coaches who were Masters students from Melbourne University, and Research Scientists from nearby organisations such as Peter Mac, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Practical work was conducted at the GTAC research laboratory, in Parkville.

This involved observing and describing tick specimens that had been gathered from across Australia and Asia by examining them under high power microscopes; to discuss if students thought their individual specimens were same or different species.

Students then isolated DNA from their ticks (target specimens for this investigation). Segments of DNA were then copied using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to generate bar codes for their individual specimens.

Part C: A virtual learning workshop conducted back at school (SASC) where students construct and analyse phylogenetic trees, using their collected data. The sequences will be curated at Genbank (Genetic sequence database) and accessible online, for example, through NCBI (the US National Centre for Biotechnology Information).

Their contribution to science may result in discovering a new species of tick!

Thankyou to Ms. Mortimer for organising and leading this excursion, Ms. Borle for her support and enthusiasm at GTAC, and our participating Yr 10 students for representing their school in such a positive manner.

Student Reflection

“Going on an excursion to GTAC was very eye-opening, it gave me an opportunity to not only connect with new peers but also gave me insight on the work conducted in a real lab.” –  Emily Hoang, 10E

Year 8 Strathbogie Camp

Read Time: ( words)

The Year 8 camp to Strathbogie was a memory-making three days filled with laughter, adventure, and new experiences.

Highlights included archery, where students tested their aim and lawn bowls provided a fun and competitive twist. Students displayed varying levels of skill rock hopping at Seven Creeks Reserve and were able to dry out later in front of campfire for ghost stories under the stars.

The night walk gave us a chance to explore the bush and spot a koala wedged in a gum tree. Back at camp, some students relaxed with nail painting, some nail techs being better than others.

Strathbogie proved to be the perfect setting for an adventurous and fun Year 8 camp.

House Program

Read Time: ( words)

On 10 September, the House Captain Team ran yet another sporty event, where students could compete with each other in intense games of Table Tennis.

One table, one net, two players – only one winner. Who would be the glorious champions of this year’s tournament?

Players were divided by year levels; Juniors (7/8), Intermediate (9/10) and Seniors (11/12).

We started it off with a standard Round-Robin competition, where contestants took turns against each other, narrowing it down to only the cream of the crop.

The ping and pang of table tennis balls filled the arena and the cheers of competitors as each point was scored, resounded throughout the gym.

Tension rose as we made our way to the Knockouts, only a select few names were able to squeeze through into the Final Rounds. Points quickly accumulated, causing speculations of who would take home the title of the ultimate winners to follow.

Brackets ranged from 4 matches all the way to 12 and after fierce competition, the following players emerged victorious:

  • Year 7 – Dan Le – 7C
  • Year 8 – Manaal Waqar – 8D
  • Year 9 – Dat Ma – 9A
  • Year 10 – Peter Tomal – 10B

Thank you to everyone who signed and showed up to this event! Not only was enthusiasm through the roof, but students demonstrated immense sportsmanship. The House Captain team commends all the collaboration exhibited throughout this tournament. <3

We look forward to organising more games like this in the remaining months we have left of this year. c:

Wednesday August 20 was the Motivational Lunch for our Year 12 students. This event is one that student’s always look forward to as it’s an opportunity for them to reflect on the effort they’ve put in over the year, the achievements they’ve made and to celebrate how far they’ve come – and to gorge on pizza! This year we invited Stephanie Stavropoulus “14 to be our keynote speaker.

Steph has built a fulfilling career as a Human Resources professional, and her communication skills shone on the day as she spoke to the Year 12s about her life journey, including her high school experiences and the lessons she learned.

Her speech touched on personal and emotional topics like her parents’ divorce and the struggles she faced. She also mentioned a desire to empower others by sharing her story and encouraged the students to “lean on those who make you feel that way” and to “never be afraid to ask for more in every aspect of your life”. The speech included themes of vulnerability, self-worth, and taking opportunities. The students were engaged, the speech was impactful, and at one stage there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as she thanked some of the teachers (specifically Mr K and Ms Woods) in the room for their mentorship and support during her school years.

A massive thank you to our alumni mentors, Lina Vo ’15, Jason Nguyen ’20, Gaylene Piscopo ’21, and Tran Nguyen ’20, for incredibly insightful sessions with a few of our Y12 students! Their generosity in sharing their time and wisdom has a meaningful impact on our students’ ability to make informed decisions about their futures.

Lina, a research officer in animal genetics, shared the versatility of a science/zoology degree and the surprising doors it can open. Jason, a biomed student on the path to medicine (currently taking a gap year), offered a realistic look at his journey. Gaylene, who works and studies in early childhood education, offered valuable perspective on her field. And Tran, currently studying Law at Monash, provided fantastic insights into what is proving to be a popular course among our students.

They covered a range of vital topics, from hands-on university experiences and diverse career pathways to managing course expectations. Our mentors also gave thoughtful advice on handling family pressure and friendships. Hearing about university life and the realities of their chosen fields from those who have lived it is invaluable.

The students who registered for these sessions are now equipped with the knowledge and confidence to take their next steps. We’re so grateful for the alumni support and for showing our students what’s possible.

St Albans Connect would like to grow this initiative so Year 11s, take note, this opportunity will be available to you next year!
