Use of E Scooters

A reminder that E scooters are illegal for young people under the age of 16.  Any student 16 or above riding one should follow the road rules and wear a helmet.

As a school we will enforce these laws for the safety of everyone.

Year 6 Taster Day

Last week we were visited by 250 Grade 6 students from various feeder primary schools. The purpose of the visit was to support the transition of these students to secondary school.

It was a very successful day. Thank you to Mr Ron Brown and Mr Billy Rowland for their leadership, and to the staff and students who supported the Grade 6 students.

Morrisby Program

As part of our Careers Program, all Year 9 students are participating in the Morrisby Program. Through a series of tests and one-on-one interviews, students gain an understanding of their aptitude and possible career options going forward. This will help support their choices into Year 10 and beyond. Thank you to Ms Cathy Armstrong and her team for facilitating this program.

The Importance of Attendance

We have been working with all our students to reinforce the importance of Attendance. Research tells us that high levels of attendance at school are closely linked with successful student achievement. Ensuring your child attends school every day is one of the best ways you can help your child’s future. Our Attendance Policy requires that all students maintain an attendance level of 90% over the year in order to successfully pass each subject.  Students who do not meet this requirement are at risk of not being promoted to the next year level. Even at this level (90%), students miss one day a fortnight. This adds up to four weeks a year – a significant amount of learning. You can access your child’s attendance rate via the Parent Portal on Compass. We also send an email out to families twice a term to give you updates on your child’s attendance. If you need support regarding attendance, please talk to your Coordinator.

Athletics Carnival

Our annual Athletics Carnival held during the first week of Term 2 was a wonderful celebration of participation, teamwork, and school spirit. It was fantastic to see students enthusiastically involved throughout the day, whether competing in events, supporting their peers, or proudly representing their houses. The positive attitude and sportsmanship displayed by all students were a credit to our school community.

Congratulations to all students who participated and achieved personal success throughout the carnival. A sincere thank you also goes to our staff, student leaders, VCE-VM team for their hard work in ensuring the day ran smoothly. Special thanks to the PE Department and the House Team for organising such an enjoyable and successful event for everyone involved.

Progress Reports

Next week staff will be finalising their student progress reports. These will be available for you to access through compass the following week. It is an important time of the year as these progress reports give a more updated indication of student progress. With exams on the horizon for Years 9, 10 and 11, it is a final opportunity to reflect on progress and to make some positive changes. It is also a time to hopefully celebrate any academic successes. Once the report data becomes available our year level coordinators will work with you to identify where any supports are needed.

We Are Better Together Week

We have just celebrated ‘We Are Better Together Week’ which culminated in a Multicultural day celebration on Friday. On this day students showcased the many cultural backgrounds we have in our school community. The week had the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’ which is our CPR theme for the year. The cultural dress looked spectacular, as did the Lion Dance performance that took place during lunchtime.

The message for the week is: no matter your culture, your religion, your race, your gender, your sexuality, your ability, your language, your differences – you matter and SASC supports you!

It was wonderful to see the pride students showed in their heritage and to see so many students and staff take part in the many activities across the week, mainly focused on student performances and dance which was also aligned to International Dance Day on Wednesday 29 April.

Anzac Day Service

As 25 April fell on a Saturday this year we are observed Anzac Day with a commemorative service run by our VCE VM Students on Monday 27 April.

It was a moving service that provided an opportunity for our school community to stop and reflect on the sacrifice and dedication of all our veteran and service community, and the families who support them.

ANZAC Day as we know it was first observed on 25 April 1916, as people came together to commemorate the landing of Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli, Türkiye, on 25 April 1915. The service we held included the well-known poem ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon as well as the Last Post, and The Rouse during which the flags were raised.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

As a school, it is important that we understand the true meaning of Anzac Day. We do not celebrate war. Instead, we recognise the cost of it, and we honour those who worked or work to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.

The service not only honours those who served in Gallipoli but also all those who have served in conflicts and peacekeeping missions around the world since then. We acknowledge the sacrifices made, not only by those who served, but also by their families and loved ones who supported them. Their stories remind us that service comes in many forms, and that sacrifice is often shared.

Lest we forget.

Junior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

Welcome back for Term 2 from the Junior Sub School. It is pleasing to see so many of our students returning refreshed from the holidays and eager to commence work in Term 2.

We have had a very busy start to the year.  Of particular note in Junior School has been the Grade 6 Taster Day on 30 April.  On this day we had approximately 230 students from surrounding primary schools attend SASC for a sneak peek at the life of a high school student.  The Grade 6 students were understandably nervous but entered into the activities with great spirit.  This will set them in good stead for the transition to secondary school next year.

On the same day as the Grade 6 Taster Day, the Year 7 students attended Melbourne Zoo.  Whilst at the zoo they attended a workshop on animal adaption.  This workshop extended their classroom studies and provided an excellent opportunity to discuss adaption strategies with trained scientists as well as handle a number of animal skulls.  Students also attended 3 keeper talks at various enclosures within the zoo.  Of particular note was the snow leopard talk, where the adult female recently gave birth to 4 healthy cubs.

Many of our Junior School students were enthusiastic participants in the Multi-Cultural Day on 1 May.  It was great to see the pride that they showed in their cultural dress and the whole day went very smoothly.

The change in the weather is a good opportunity to check on uniform requirements.  Note that only school jumpers and jackets are to be worn to and from school.  Also, the uniform policy stipulates black school shoes must be worn at all times.  Black track pants are not school uniform.  Plain black pants of a similar style and fabric to the pants sold in the uniform shop may be worn.  Note also that the General Office sells plain white socks at a good price.

Progress Reports are due from teachers on 14 May and will be available for students and parents a few days later.  This is an opportunity to check on the academic progress and work habits of students.  Please read these reports on Compass when they become available.

Mr Craig Moore – Junior Sub School Leader

Middle School Report

Read Time: ( words)

We welcome back all Middle School students and families from the term break and look forward to working with you to support all students achieve their best. Middle School students have had a busy start to Term 2, with several excursions and opportunities for Year 9 and 10 students to participate in.

Year level assemblies were held in week 2, where we celebrated ‘Better Together’ week and the theme Unity in Diversity. It has been a week filled with opportunities to remember that we can all achieve more when we work as a community and support each other. Performances throughout the week provided opportunities for all staff and students to celebrate our cultures, which culminated in Multicultural Day on Friday 1st May.

Student Awards at Middle Sub School Assembly

The assemblies also provided an opportunity to celebrate student successes from term 1, as we drew the next round of raffle tickets and handed out prizes. Students receive a ticket for being safe, responsible and respectful in the yard and classroom, with the chance of winning a prize. Congratulation to the winners that were drawn this term!

Year 9 students have continued their work that began in term 1 with the Morrisby Interviews. This term they been attending their one-on-one career counselling interviews, where they explored the results from their online survey. Students were guided through the results and were provided with the necessary tools required to start thinking about their career pathway.

We hope all our Middle School students and families have had a safe and warm start to term two and we look forward to the upcoming exam and semester test periods where students can put all of their hard work and effort on show.

Mr Andrei Alexandrescu – Acting Middle Sub School Leader

Senior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

The start of Term Two has been a productive and engaging time for our senior students, with a strong focus on learning opportunities, leadership, and community connection. It has been particularly pleasing to see our students continue to grow as confident, capable, and community-minded young people.

Soccer Challenge

On the last day of Term One, the highly anticipated annual Soccer Challenge between the Elite Elevens (Year 11) and Labubu Central (Year 12) teams took place, with the Year 12s securing a dominant and well-earned victory. Both teams approached the game with enthusiasm and commitment and delivered an engaging and energetic match. While the scoreboard favoured the Year 12s, it was a celebration of teamwork, sportsmanship, and the strong sense of community that continues to unite our sub-school each year.

Coffee Service & Foodbank

During the Parent Teacher Interviews in the last week of Term One, the VCE VM students ran a coffee service for families and staff. With support from the Wellbeing Team, students worked together to prepare and serve complimentary barista coffee/hot drinks and cakes, with the aim of creating a welcoming environment for families. The students also supported Foodbank by preparing the food items in H1 and supporting families to access them. It was a great opportunity for students to build their teamwork and customer service skills in a real-world setting.

ANZAC Day

Our Year 12 VCE VM students held a ceremony to commemorate ANZAC Day on Monday 27 April 2026. The students led the ANZAC Day service, and the School Captains laid a wreath to acknowledge the contribution and sacrifice of all those who have served our country. Thank you to all staff and students who attended the important ceremony. Lest we Forget.

Year 11 & Year 12 Assemblies

The Year 11 and Year 12 assemblies were held on Wednesday 29 May 2026. The focus of the assemblies was to share the message of our “Better Together” week and “Unity in Diversity” CPR theme. Feedback from the Resilient Youth Survey and Student Forums were shared, along with actions for improvement. Exam expectations and procedures were also communicated at the assembly.

Thank you to our presenters Tamara Penaia Te’o and Tina Le (Year 12) and Jennifer To and Amelia Hua (Year 11) for running the assemblies. Thank you also to Ezekiel Ong for sharing the forum feedback and offering suggestions to further improve student outcomes.

We would like to encourage our senior students to build their leadership, confidence and public speaking skills by volunteering for future assemblies. If you are interested in presenting, please see us in the Senior Sub School.

Multicultural Day

On Friday 1 May 2026, VCE VM students celebrated the diverse cultures within our school community by running stalls and selling a variety of homemade food from around the world at lunchtime. As part of the Multicultural celebrations, students wore cultural dress and enjoyed music and professional dance performances from different cultures. The event had a very positive atmosphere, and it was wonderful to see the school community come together to celebrate cultural inclusivity with such pride and enjoyment.

VCE VM Brimbank Careers Expo.

The VCE VM students attended the Brimbank Careers Expo on Wednesday 6 May 2026 at Lakeside Reception Centre. Students had access to a range of university, TAFE and training providers, and collected useful information and resources to inform their future pathway.

Victorian Careers Show

Similarly, all Year 11 students will attend the larger Victorian Careers Show at the Melbourne Showgrounds on Friday 15 May 2026 to gain further knowledge of the careers and pathways available to them.

CHASE Program

The Year 11 VCE VM students have started the CHASE program. CHASE is a community initiative working to improve health through education. Their goal is to see young people empowered to take control of their own health, to then engage with their local communities to improve health awareness and outcomes. The program is being run by students from the universities across Melbourne. The VCE VM students will continue to work with their mentors throughout Term 2, to implement their projects and achieve their health-related goals.

Student Leadership

Congratulations to the Senior Student Leadership Team on successfully facilitating the Student Leadership Conference on Wednesday 6 May. The day provided a valuable opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills, collaborate with peers across sub-schools, and engage in meaningful discussions and activities. Our senior student leaders were outstanding role models and facilitated the event with confidence and enthusiasm. We are proud of the way they represented our sub school and supported younger students to develop their leadership skills. Well done! See Tamara’s report below.

Helping Hands Fundraising

On Wednesday 6 May, Zahrah Sajadi, Nhi Tran, Fili Senetenari Fiu Iosefa and Vaiolupe Mavae organised and ran a hot dog stand as part of their PDS Complex Project to raise funds for Helping Hands. Helping Hands is a charity that supports individuals and families experiencing hardship by providing essential items and practical assistance. The funds raised will be used to purchase toiletries for ‘dignity bags’, which will be donated to Helping Hands to support people in need and promote a sense of care and respect within our local community.

Progress Reports

Year 11 Progress Reports are due next week. Year Level Coordinators will be interviewing students and speaking to parents/guardians, as needed. Progress reports will be available for students and parents/guardians to view from Friday 22 May 2026.

Exams

Year 11 end-of-unit exams will commence from Wednesday 27 May to Friday 5 June 2026. The students will be preparing for their exams in classes. The Year 12 practice exams will be held during the holidays from Thursday 2 July to Tuesday 8 July 2026, except the English Exam which will be held on Report Writing Day on Friday 12 June 2026. We encourage all Year 12 students to use the study schedules, which they were encouraged to develop during their study skills session, and to ensure they have allocated adequate time for both revision and study. A quiet and well-organised study space at home is essential for effective study.

GAT

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) General Achievement Test (GAT) for all students completing a Unit 3/4 subject will be held across the State on Tuesday 16 June 2026. To help students prepare for the GAT, the Senior Sub School will organise a compulsory information session closer to the date.

Uniform

A reminder that as the weather is cooling down, students can purchase the school scarf and jacket from the uniform shop on Mondays and Thursdays at lunchtime. The school scarf is the only scarf to be worn at school.

We request that parents/guardians contact the school if their child is absent and that a medical certificate is obtained, where possible. Students are required to meet our Attendance Policy for a satisfactory result in their end-of-semester reports.

We would like to thank parents for their continued support of the Senior Sub School, and invite them to contact us on 9366 2555 if they have any queries or concerns about their child.

Tamara Penaia-Te’o

On Wednesday the 6th of May, a large group of enthusiastic emerging leaders from Years 7 to 11 participated in the College’s Student Leadership Conference, “More Than Just A Title”, facilitated by the Year 12 College Leadership Team.

The conference was an amazing experience focused on engaging younger student leaders, supporting them in developing their understanding of ‘Leadership’ through meaningful collaboration and connection with others across the College.

This exciting day was shaped by the insightful speeches and discussions from past student leaders, including Ricardo Vom (College Captain of 2025) and Cylene Mahgri (College Leader of 2015), alongside Assistant Principals Mrs Tracy D’Ellton and Mr John Coulson-Silva, who shared their experiences and offered real world perspectives on what effective leadership looks like both within and beyond the school setting.

Students then moved into a variety of workshops and activities, collaboratively facilitated by student leaders, staff and former College Leader, Haily Le (Class of 2025), encouraging open interaction across year levels to learn about the practical application of leadership skills ranging from ‘Advertising Events’ to ‘Giving Feedback’ within our roles. The day concluded with a range of student-led Action planning, where students worked within their leadership roles to identify key issues and explore the ways they could actively make a difference within the school community.

Overall, the conference taught us that ‘Leadership’ is not defined by a title alone but is an everyday choice shaped through the actions we take and the impact we choose to leave.

Yr 10 Philosophy

Read Time: ( words)

Monday, 4 March, SASC’s first Year 10 philosophy class embarked on an eventful excursion that took place at The University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus. The experience was educational and stimulating for students while showcasing The University of Melbourne as strong candidates for their future studies.

The students participated in a “Crisis Communication in a Zombie Apocalypse” activity delivered by Dr. Jen Beckett. The activity provided insight in communication media and included an interactive apocalyptic roleplay for the students who had to receive and transmit information across groups. This provided students with a challenging, interactive way of learning about technologies and distributing information in the midst of a crisis.

An in-depth campus tour of The University of Melbourne granted the students an understanding of the inner workings of university life for students. They observed and were told about the numerous educational buildings and student facilities.

The class explored familiar topics taught in class such as Utilitarianism and Kantian Ethics, delivered through a thought-provoking lecture by Dr. James Kent. The students crafted their own arguments using the theories, focusing on euthanasia. Dr. James Kent provided the class with a new take on philosophy as a subject, relaying its importance in the real world and how we apply these theories to daily life. The lecture offered students a compelling and insightful take on the theory taught as well as the subject of philosophy as a whole.

Overall, this excursion equipped students with newfound knowledge on the complexities of university life, and comprehension of philosophy as well as communication media.

Multicultural Day

During Multicultural Day, the SRC ran a polaroid photobooth to raise money for future student-led projects and spread awareness of the SRC. We were able to capture precious memories of students and their peers, embracing their heritage and coming together to share their culture.

In preparation for the event, the committee worked with determination; to advocate for a full day in multicultural clothing and to make the day enjoyable for everyone.

On behalf of the SRC, we would like to thank the Principal Class Team who acknowledged this proposal and put it into action; especially Ms D’Elton who made sure the day ran smoothly. We extend our appreciation to the Coordinators, Ms Sarah, Ms Dee and Ms Tracy, for their efforts in distributing the wristbands.

This event marks an important milestone, highlighting the team’s collaborative efforts in representing the student body. We look forward to advocating for more student-led initiatives in the future, aiming to make 2026 a memorable year for our school community. Feel free to reach out to your year level SRC or the Year 12 College Leadership Team with your ideas and suggestions. We would love to hear from you!

Year 11 & 12 Soccer Challenge

Right from the get-go, we knew we were ready for a glorious victory. In the lead-up to the match, we held training sessions where the Year 12 team showed up with enthusiasm and were eager to put in the work. As the Labubu Central’s managers, we were glad to see everyone locked in, full of excitement and confident with their positions on the field.

Throughout the organising process, we focused on building rotations with strong chemistry and offensive power to create what we collectively deemed as our “Ultimate Line-up”.

Before kick-off, the message for the team was plain and simple: win. And that’s exactly what unfolded. From the start, we controlled the flow of the game. Strong defence, quick passing, and everyone doing their job. It was great to see that everything we practised had come together. Despite the formidable battle the Year 11 team displayed, we continued to showcase intense pressure which fundamentally led to a sensational 20-6 triumph.

Overall, we would like to attribute our success to everyone involved: from the Year 12 College Leadership Team & SSS SRC working behind the scenes to make event happen, the Senior Sub School for their guidance & support, Mr Jason Price for refereeing the match, the cheerleading squad for bringing the energy, Ms Le & Mr. Nguyen for supervising the training sessions, the players for an amazing performance, and the Year 12 cohort for their support.

Marrung Program

Read Time: ( words)

The Marrung Program and Wellbeing welcomed many of our First Nations students and their families to a BBQ held at school on the evening of 25 March. This is one of a number of opportunities created by the school for our First Nations families to come together, make connections and acknowledge the work of these students and families within our school community to promote culture, identity and belonging. There were more than 25 family members in attendance and despite a troublesome BBQ hotplate, we managed to serve plenty of burgers, steaks, sausages, salad, bread and soft drinks and provide a space and time for the diverse First Nations community of the school to come together.

This event will be held again in Term Four and an open invitation is extended to all of our First Nations students and families to join us. Additionally, at the start of Term Three, the school will acknowledge NAIDOC Week and will conduct a Smoking Ceremony with the Woi-Wurrung Corporation and would love to see parents and family members there. We also extend an invitation to the parents of First Nations students to participate in the schools Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Group and participate in the work of the school to achieve tangible goals in the advancement of relations between First Nations people and the wider community.

From Classroom to Community: ADVANCE Students Step Up

On Tuesday 31 March 2026, our Year 9 ADVANCE students proudly represented the college during a visit to St Albans East Primary School, where they supported the school’s annual Cross Country event.

From the moment they arrived, our students embraced the opportunity to give back to the local community. Whether they were positioned along the course guiding runners, assisting staff with organisation, or cheering loudly at the finish line, their presence was felt throughout the entire event. Their encouragement helped lift the energy of the day, with many primary students responding positively to the support and motivation.

What stood out most was the way our ADVANCE students conducted themselves. They demonstrated maturity, initiative, and a strong sense of responsibility, stepping confidently into leadership roles and modelling positive behaviour for younger students. Their willingness to engage, encourage, and support others reflected the core values of the ADVANCE program.

Events like this highlight the importance of community connection and service learning. By stepping outside the classroom and contributing in meaningful ways, students gain valuable real-world experience while making a genuine impact. Our students represented the college with pride, showing kindness, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to helping others succeed.

We are incredibly proud of the effort and attitude displayed by our Year 9 ADVANCE cohort. Their contribution not only supported the smooth running of the event but also strengthened our connection with the local community. It was a rewarding experience for all involved, and we look forward to continuing these opportunities in the future.

Students from Years 7–12 came together to celebrate diversity and creativity during Better Together Week and International Dance Day with a vibrant cultural dance showcase.

In term 1, students rehearsed in their own groups to create choreography, plan their cultural attire, and choose their music. Throughout Better Together Week, students have been rotating performance groups at lunch time to present their dances and share their cultures with the St. Albans Secondary College community.
